Query:SUTTON/COLE/SHIELDS of Jefferson and Fayette Counties

Looking for information Andrew Jackson Laurel Cole Sutton was by all accounts born October 16, 1824 in Jefferson County. According to so-far unsubstantiated records, he was the son of David Sutton and "Mercy Cole".  This David Sutton was supposedly born 4 March 1802 in Ohio and died 1871 Center Twp, Rush County, IN. He is listed in marriage records as having been married to Elizabeth Shields, No 1821, Fayette County IN. Meanwhile, there is a "Mercy A Sutton" buried in the Methodist Graveyard, Dupont, Jefferson County, and her grave inscription reads "Consort of D. Sutton".

Can anyone suggest any resources for substantiating Andrew JLC Sutton's parentage?

I would be grateful for any guidance you can share!

Thank you.

Social Security Death Index under attack

Once again the United States Congress is taking aim at the Social Security Death Index.  The Legal Genealogist has an article about H.R. 295, the Protect and Save Act of 2013.  You can read about it here:
http://www.legalgenealogist.com/blog/2013/01/30/news-from-the-ssdi-front/

In addition, another bill has been filed: H.R. 466, the Social Security Death Master File Privacy Act of 2013.  Library Journal's infoDocket has information and the PDF's of both bills on their website:
http://www.infodocket.com/2013/02/12/u-s-congress-social-security-death-index-another-bill-limiting-access-hr-466/

We can probably expect more bills to be filed in Congress on this issue.

Contact Indiana Legislators For A New State Archives

For over a decade Indiana's State Archives have been housed in a "temporary" location - a former warehouse on the east side of Indianapolis (photo courtesy of Ron Darrah). This building was not designed to be an archival repository and is not climate-controlled, and the documents and other materials are at risk from a leaky roof, as well as high winds and tornados.

The Indiana General Assembly is already making appropriations to commemorate the state's bicentennial in 2016 - funds are being designated for the Indiana War Memorial to preserve the battle flags from Indiana's Civil War units, and plans are being made to purchase land for a new state park. A new building for the Indiana State Archives is the best way to ensure that Indiana's history (both recent and going back to territorial days) is around for the next 200 years.

Not sure who your Indiana representatives are? Lookup your district. You can then find the contact information for all of the Indiana General Assembly.

Not a resident of Indiana? You can still contact Governor Mike Pence. The House Ways and Means committee is in charge of crafting the budget - contact the Ways and Means chair, Representative Tim Brown of Crawfordsville.

IGS To Host Hendricks County Probate Records Work Session in April

Want to get a glimpse at what life was like in the mid-1800's? Stop by the Danville Public Library in Hendricks County, Indiana on Saturday, April 6 any time from 9 am to 4 pm to help the Indiana Genealogical Society unfold and organize some of Hendricks County's probate records.

This is part of our continuing effort to preserve and digitize Hendricks County's early probate records, which are currently stored in the courthouse basement. Unfolding and organizing the documents is crucial preparation for the end goal - being digitized and put online for free access on our website. Since this project began, over 2,700 probate records have been worked on, and over 700 of them are online so far.

You don't have to have a family connection to Hendricks County - working with these records can be addictive! These records include receipts from doctors for making house calls, orders for tombstones (including the inscriptions to be written on them), and even original documents for Civil War service and a land purchase from the federal government.

You can stay for as little or as long as you like - lunch is on your own. Please register with the library – register online through the library's events calendar or by contacting the library - phone (317) 745-2604.

Questions? E-mail webmaster@indgensoc.org.

Query: SHORT, Clinton

I would be very grateful for any help that anyone can give me.

Query: ROGERS of Blackford County

.My two siblings and I are trying to locate information regarding the burial location of our grandmother who died in Blackford County , Indiana , in 1922.   My brother obtained a copy of the death certificate, so we know that she is buried somewhere in Montpelier (according to the DC).  However, the cemetery name listed is “ Montpelier Cemetery ”, which we are unable to locate.

The death certificate indicates that the undertaker who took care of my grandmother’s remains was J. Will Baxter.
Our grandmother died in 1922.  The particulars of the information contained on the death certificate are as follows:
Name:  Minnie L. ROGERS
Date of birth:    Aug 8, 1889
Date of death:   Feb 11, 1922
Place of death:  414 W. Henderson St . , Montpelier , Indiana .
County of Blackford
Township of Harrison
Name of husband:         Grant J. Rogers
Name of father:             W. H. Allen                  Birthplace:        N.C.
Mother’s maiden name: Mary Finney                 Birthplace:        Indiana
Date of burial:               Feb 14, 1922
Place of burial:              Montpelier , Indiana
Undertaker:                  W. Wells Baxter
Address:                       Hartford City , Indiana
Embalmer’s License:     1328

Through correspondence with the Indiana State Library, my brother has also obtained copies of the mortuary records from the book entitled, “Index to J. Will Baxter Mortuary Records, Hartford City , Indiana . Jan. 8, 1906--June 26, 1928”.   Information contained on page 153 of the book mentions the following:
“ROGERS, MINNIE L.
               fu. [date of funeral] Feb. 14, 1922 -- p.d. [place of death] 414 W. Henderson St. --ser. [service] Nazarene Ch. --d. [date of death] Feb. 11 -- m.s. [marital status] m -- b.d. [date of birth] Aug. 8, 1889 -- age 32 yrs. 6 mos. 3 days -- f. [father] W.H. Allen -- b.p. [birthplace] N.C. -- m. [mother] Mary Finney -- b.p. Ind. -- res. [residence] Montpelier -- cem. [cemetery where buried] Montpelier ”

This additional information shows that the funeral service was held at the Nazarene Church .   It states that the cemetery where buried is “ Montpelier ”.  However, we are unable to locate a cemetery in Montpelier , Indiana with that name.

Any information would be greatly appreciated.
