IGS Adds Clark County & Jefferson County Database To Members-Only

The Indiana Genealogical Society has added a database about residents of Clark County and Jefferson County to the County Records section of our Members Only area:

This is a premium database, accessible only to IGS members.

April 2014 IGS Newsletter Added To Members-Only Area

The Indiana Genealogical Society has added the April 2014 issue of IGS Newsletter, the society's bi-monthly newsletter for IGS members, to the Members Only area. IGS members must login to the IGS Records section to get their copy.

This issue features a Q & A with Mark Lowe, the featured speaker at our conference in Fort Wayne, as well as a welcome to the new newsletter editor. There are also genealogy news items from around the state.

The newsletter is available for download in its regular size, as well as in a compressed version which downloads faster on slower Internet connections.

The newsletter is a premium database, accessible only to IGS members.

LaPorte County Genealogical Society To Discuss DNA Testing

The LaPorte County, Indiana Genealogical Society will meet on Tuesday, April 8 at 7 pm at the LaPorte Parks & Recreation Department Office (250 Pine Lake Ave., LaPorte IN). Jeffrey Bassett will speak on DNA testing as a tool in genealogical research, presenting some case studies from his own Bassett family DNA project (which was featured in The New England Ancestors).

Descendants of Civil War Regiment from Southern Indiana Sought

Descendants of those who served in the 25th Indiana Infantry in the Civil War are being sought by the South Carolina State Park Service. They are planning events in February 2015 to mark the 150th anniversary of the Battle of Rivers Bridge in South Carolina and would like to share the stories of the soldiers who participated in the battle. The 25th Indiana Infantry was organized in Evansville in 1861. It roster included residents of Posey County, Spencer County, Vanderburgh County and Warrick County.

Society of Indiana Archivists to Hold Spring Workshop in Indianapolis

The Society of Indiana Archivists will hold their spring workshop on Friday, April 4 from 1 to 4 pm at the Indiana State Library in Indianapolis. Amanda Starkel will present a session, "Wikipedia for Archivists," about how to use Wikipedia to improve the visibility of your archival collections. The workshop will cover the basics of Wikipedia editing, policy, and licensing, preparing you to edit articles, upload images, and navigate the Wikipedia community. You are encouraged to bring your laptop or tablet computer with you, as this session will involve hands-on instruction. If needed, there will also be a limited number of loaner laptops available.

For Indiana librarians, the workshop is eligible for 3 Technology LEUs, and also 2 Archival Recertification Credits (ARC) from the Academy of Certified Archivists. Registration is $15 for Society of Indiana Archivists members, $20 for non-members. The deadline to register is Friday, March 28. IGS to Hold Free Seminar at Allen County Public Library in Fort Wayne

FOUND: Bartholomew County marriage license 1923

Bonnie Merriman (Merrimanbb@aol.com) has found what appears to be the original marriage license for Fred Herman WEHMEIER and Mildred Minnie GRAFFA. It has a raised seal from Bartholomew County and is dated September 11, 1923. If you are a relative and are interested in the document, please contact her directly.

NOTE: According to the marriage application (found online at FamilySearch), Fred Herman Wehmeier was born January 22, 1892 in Bartholomew County, the son of Henry D. Wehmeier and Malinda Brockman. Mildred Minnie Graffa was born July 23, 1901 in Waymansville, Indiana, the daughter of Edward Graffa and Emma Limecrarger.

Southern Indiana Genealogical Society To Have Living History Program

The Thursday, April 3 meeting of the Southern Indiana Genealogical Society will include a program with living history. Melissa Wiseheart will portray Olivia Butterfield, the New Albany Public Library’s first librarian, and Mandy Dick will portray Harriet Scribner, the last owner of the historic Scribner House. IGS Appoints County Genealogist for Parke County

The Indiana Genealogical Society welcomes Mike Lewman of Montezuma as the Indiana County Genealogist for Parke County. He was appointed by the IGS board at the February meeting. He is currently the President and Publicity Chair of the Wabash Valley Genealogy Society, President of the Parke County Historical Society, and the Founder and President of the Hixon Cemetery Association Ltd. South Bend & Elkhart Genealogical Societies To Sponsor Research Trip to Allen County Library

The South Bend Area Genealogical Society and the Elkhart County Genealogical Society are co-sponsoring a bus trip on Saturday, May 10 to the Allen County Public Library in Fort Wayne for a day of research. The bus will pick up and drop off passengers at 2 designated stops in Mishawaka and Goshen.

IGS Appoints County Genealogist for Kosciusko County

The Indiana Genealogical Society welcomes Teri Wheeler of Leesburg as the Indiana County Genealogist for Kosciusko County. She was appointed by the IGS board at the February meeting. Teri is the owner of Ancestors in the Attic, Inc. and has been a volunteer at the Kosciusko County Historical Society's Genealogy Library since 2012. South Bend Group To Discuss Social Media for Genealogists

Twigs from the Tree of Life group will meet on Tuesday, March 25 at 7 pm at Christ the King Lutheran Church in South Bend (17195 Cleveland Rd., South Bend IN). South Bend Library To Discuss DNA Testing for Genealogists

The St. Joseph County Public Library, in collaboration with the South Bend Area Genealogical Society, will present two free lectures by DNA expert Roberta Estes on Saturday, April 12 in the library's Colfax Auditorium (located on Main Street in South Bend). In the first session, "DNA and Genealogy Introduction," at 10:30 am, Estes will discuss the types of DNA testing that are available and how these tests can serve genealogy researchers. The second session, "Yikes, My Results Are Back! Now What?", will begin at 1:30 pm. In it, Estes will cover how to interpret DNA test results for both Y-line and mitochondrial DNA.

Query: Andrew or Clarissa Shepard, Ohio/Ripley Counties



                I am searching for the parents of Andrew Shepard (my paternal g-g grandfather).  Andrew was born in 1824 in Indiana and died in 1882 in Iowa. He married Rebecca Ann Elston, daughter of Franklin Elston, in Ohio County, Indiana, on April 28, 1853. 
                Andrew lived with his mother, Clarissa, before his marriage in Ohio County, Indiana, (see 1850 federal census) and in Ripley County, Indiana, (see 1840 federal census). 
                Clarissa says she was born ca 1801 in New York.  She had several children, among them a daughter named Nancy and another son named James.

The Allen County Genealogical Society of Indiana's Genealogy Technology Group will meet on Wednesday, March 19 in Meeting Room B of the Allen County Public Library in Fort Wayne. FOUND: Photo of Russell S. Martin of Randolph County & Tipton County

Shelley Cardiel (cardiels@comcast.net) has found this photo of a Russell S. MARTIN which was taken at the E. R. Hiatt Studio in Winchester, Randolph County, Indiana. The photograph is dated 1890, with Russell just an infant at the time. According to the limited research Shelley was able to do, Russell Stephen MARTIN was born 18 April 1890 in Randolph County, Indiana to parents Alfred Orzo MARTIN (1865-1940) and Mary Luella ALDRICH (1868-1940). He was one of 5 children born to this couple: Basil Aldrich; Emily I.; Russell Stephen; Davis, and Doris L. MARTIN, all born between 1887 and 1902.

Russell Martin married Leah THROCKMORTON (1890-1996) and together they had 5 children. He died in May 1979 in Tipton County, Indiana and is buried in the Fairview Cemetery in Tipton.
