DUNCAN and TICHENOR of Gibson County

Beth Gilbert, who lives outside Atlanta, Georgia, has a booklet from 1863 entitled "Regulations for the recruiting service of the Army of the United States." Inside the booklet it is signed "Capt W M Duncan 80th Ind. Infty," and there is also a note on the inside page stating he was "placed on recruiting service Nov 18th 1863 relieved on April 24th 1864." His name is also written on the last page - along with the name "Jonah Ticheron Ind vols Infantry 2d Div 23 (?)."

According to Volume III of Report of the Adjutant General of the State of Indiana: Containing Indiana in the War of The Rebellion (1869), the roster for the 80th Indiana Infantry shows that William M. Duncan of Princeton was Captain of Company A. He was commissioned April 13, 1864, mustered in May 11, 1864 and mustered out with the regiment. It also shows he started out as a 2nd Lieutenant, who was commissioned September 5, 1862, mustered in September 6, 1862 and promoted to captain.

Jonah G. Tichenor of Princeton also shows up in the roster for Company A of the 80th Indiana Infantry, as a 1st Lieutenant. He was commissioned July 1, 1864, mustered in September 16, 1864 and mustered out with the regiment.

Beth is sharing this information in hopes it can be helpful to a family member.

Marriage Indexing: "By Whom Affidavit Is Made" -- Who is that?

"By Whom Affidavit Is Made" wants the name of the person signing an oath that the bride and/or groom is 'qualified' to marry. If either of them is underage, the signer of the affidavit is giving permission for them to marry. The signer of the affidavit might be saying one or both of the parties has legal residence in the county issuing the license. The affidavit is an oath that legal requirements to marry are met and the person signing it is usually a parent, a family member, or a person who knows the couple well enough to know there are no legal reasons why the couple cannot marry.

The signer of the affidavit IS NOT the county clerk. We do not need the county clerk's name on any of the indexes but if parents had to sign for underage children to marry, or a neighbor has to sign saying he/she knows the individual lives in this county, a researcher wants the name of that person signing the affidavit. It could be the clue needed to take the research back one more generation.

Thanks for all your help and thanks for paying attention to details like the above to 'get it right' for future researchers!

Query: HASKIN/HOLMES of Wayne County

I am looking for any information on my great-grandparents Sarah Jane Haskins and John Holmes who were married 18 June 1883 in Wayne County, Indiana. Sarah Jane Haskins' mother was Caroline Haskins (born in England, died in Dublin, Wayne County, Indiana in 1911) and her father was Henry Haskins, a baker who was born in England. Sarah Jane Haskins was born in 1863 in Bristol, England.

I have a marriage license for the 1883 marriage in Wayne County, but it only gives her and John's names. I am looking to locate a marriage certificate with the parents' names, professions and any other details.

The only information I have on my great-grandfather John Holmes is that he was born about 1864 and that he and his wife settled in Birkenhead, Cheshire, England in 1884 where they lived and died and brought up their family. I made contact with the Clark County records office and was most greatful for the marriage license they sent me. I have even called from here in the UK but could not get any more information.

I would be most greatful if anyone can help me with any information what soever, many thanks.
