DUNCAN and TICHENOR of Gibson County

Beth Gilbert, who lives outside Atlanta, Georgia, has a booklet from 1863 entitled "Regulations for the recruiting service of the Army of the United States." Inside the booklet it is signed "Capt W M Duncan 80th Ind. Infty," and there is also a note on the inside page stating he was "placed on recruiting service Nov 18th 1863 relieved on April 24th 1864." His name is also written on the last page - along with the name "Jonah Ticheron Ind vols Infantry 2d Div 23 (?)."

According to Volume III of Report of the Adjutant General of the State of Indiana: Containing Indiana in the War of The Rebellion (1869), the roster for the 80th Indiana Infantry shows that William M. Duncan of Princeton was Captain of Company A. He was commissioned April 13, 1864, mustered in May 11, 1864 and mustered out with the regiment. It also shows he started out as a 2nd Lieutenant, who was commissioned September 5, 1862, mustered in September 6, 1862 and promoted to captain.

Jonah G. Tichenor of Princeton also shows up in the roster for Company A of the 80th Indiana Infantry, as a 1st Lieutenant. He was commissioned July 1, 1864, mustered in September 16, 1864 and mustered out with the regiment.

Beth is sharing this information in hopes it can be helpful to a family member.
