Query: DESTIGNER/DESTAZER/DESTIGER/DESBYNE

I am searching for the fate of an Indiana Civil War Union soldier, Private Emanuel DESTIGNER, born 1843, Ohio.

He served in the 100th, 55th and 48th Indiana
Infantry Regiments, I think.

His name gets butchered in rosters; spelled as DESTIGNER, DESTAZER, DESTIGER, maybe even DESBYNE.

A reliable family member (a judge) wrote, in 1888, that Emanuel was with Sherman's army, and was killed by Wade Hampton's men near Raleigh, NC while foraging; his body was never recovered.

I there anyone that can help confirm this?

Thank you
