Query: Restoring Documents

Query: I have an ornate wedding certificate from my parents' marrige in 1929. The document is yellowing, cracking and brittle. My mother taped many of the tears with scotch tape many years ago. Query: DARROUGH of Montgomery County

Query: I have discovered some exciting reading material--the personal diaries of my great-grandfather, John Thomas Darrough, of Shannondale, Montgomery County, Indiana. There are 48 diaries total, spanning from 1867 (when he was 22) to 1921 or so.I am having so much fun reading his daily farming life story--it's really detailed. He mentions LOTS of local people and events. I am interested in finding out anything about my great-grandfather, and would appreciate somebody pointing me in the right direction. I'd like to find his birth record, but I don't know where he was born. I also know he was a Ruling Elder at Bethel Presbyterian Church near Shannondale.

Thanks so much!

Franklin County Census Glitch On Ancestry.com

Users who access the 1840 census for Franklin County, Indiana on Ancestry.com should be aware that not all of the census is where it should be. Alert user Jim Parvis has noticed that about 75% of the pages from the 1840 Franklin County census have been mistakenly included in Ancestry's images of the 1840 census for Fountain County, Indiana. In non-Ancestry versions, the Franklin County census runs from page 254 through page 319. Yet on Ancestry, it only shows pages 254 through 274 for Franklin County--beginning with page 275, the pages are attributed to Fountain County.

Users can reach these incorrectly assigned pages by going to 1840 Fountain County and then asking it to display those pages where the township is "not stated."

IGS To Preserve Records in Hendricks County

The Indiana Genealogical Society recently began a Records Preservation Project in Hendricks County, Indiana. The Jefferson County courthouse fire in May underscored the dangers that records in ALL Indiana counties face, from the rigors of time as well as from natural disasters.

Unfortunately, not all communities are fortunate enough to have organized genealogy groups that can lead the effort to preserve their local records. IGS is coordinating volunteers as well as funds to preserve and digitize 25 boxes of probate records that are in the basement of the Hendricks County courthouse in Danville. These records date from the county's founding in 1824 up to 1899 and have never been microfilmed, indexed or otherwise been accessible to the public. They contain valuable information about some of the county's earliest settlers.

When this project is completed, copies of the digitized files will be given to the Hendricks County courthouse and Hendricks County libraries, and they will also be available for searching as a free database on the IGS website. The original records will be permanently stored in the Archives of the Plainfield Public Library.

IGS is looking for more volunteers, as well as monetary donations to help purchase the archival storage supplies and digital camera. For more information--including a sample file you can view--please visit the Projects section of the IGS website.

Query: RANDALL of Cass County

Query: My grandmother, Susan Augusta Randall, was born 5 November 1880 in Logansport, Cass County, Indiana. I am interested in a Randall family in the 1870 and 1880 censuses for Logansport, Cass County:

Charles H. Randall (born about 1830 in New Hampshire) married Augusta or Augustus (born about 1841 in Massachusetts) and had children:

--Mary J. (born about 1860 in Massachusetts; died after 1870)
--Charles A. (born about 1873 in Indiana; died after 1880)
--Hattie J. (born about 1875 in Indiana)

According to the death index for Cass County, Charles H. Randall died 4 December 1881 in Logansport, age 52.

I am looking for any information on the maiden name of Augusta/Augustus who married Charles H. Randall. I'm also interested in finding out what happened to his daughter Mary J. Randall--did she die or marry? Perhaps she was born in Indiana and not Massachusetts. I'd also like to find out who are the parents of Charles H. Randall and find any property deeds.

Query: STEHMAN/TODD/BEAVER of Hamilton County

Query: My husband, Jerry Stehman, was born July 26, 1942 to Donald Stehman and Rosetta (Todd) Stehman, who lived at 1463 Wayne St. in Noblesville, Hamilton County, Indiana. Donald Stehman was killed in World War II on February 14, 1944. We believe his widow Rosetta T. Stehman then married a man with the surname of Beaver. We also believe Rosetta and her husband had a daughter between 1945 and 1947. Rosetta died in 1946 or 1947 and is buried in the Cicero cemetery under the name Rosetta Beaver. Jerry's twin brother, Donald, is buried next to her. Rosetta's parents (surname Todd) then raised Jerry, but the daughter was raised by the Beaver family. IGS Adds African-American Database to Members-Only

The Indiana Genealogical Society has added a database, Individuals Associated with Indiana’s African-American Settlements (1817-1930) to the African-American Records section of Members-Only. This database is free and is being shared with the Indiana Genealogical Society and the Allen County Public Library's Genealogy Center. It is part of a larger effort by Dawne Slater-Putt, CG to study Indiana’s African-American settlements from their earliest days through about 1930.

The database includes the individual’s name, approximate year of birth and date of death (if known), and the names of the townships and counties with which the individual was associated. Women are cross-referenced under their maiden names. The database also includes links to newspaper articles about the individual (when available). It will be updated over time.
