IGS Adds Free Wells County Cemetery Database

The Indiana Genealogical Society has added a free database of a Wells County cemetery index to the County Records section of our Members Only area:

This database is free to the public - no membership is needed in order to view it.

Boone County Historical Records Moved to Lebanon Library

The Boone County Courthouse has permamently loaned some of their books of historical records to the Ralph W. Stark Heritage Center of the Lebanon Public Library. The record books are all pre-1930 and include probate, wills, insane, criminal and marriage records.

Adams County Historical Records Moved Offsite

Adams County historical records, which had been stored at the old County Jail for the past 20 years, have now been moved to the Geneva Bank. No announcement has been made about how the public can obtain access to these records at their new site. Questions may be directed to the Adams County Clerk.

Southern Indiana Genealogical Society To Meet in New Albany

The Rivers Institute Traveling Show will present "Tales of the Ohio River Valley" at the Thursday, August 2 meeting of the Southern Indiana Genealogical Society. FamilySearch Announces Immigration & Naturalization Records Indexing Project

With the 1940 census indexing project heading for completion, FamilySearch is already planning its next great indexing initiative - U.S. immigration and naturalization records. Volunteers willing to do some indexing and/or arbitrating are being sought to work on digitized immigration records and naturalization records covering the 1800's up to the 1950's. These records include passenger lists for the major U.S. ports such as Philadelphia, New York, Boston and New Orleans.

FamilySearch Adds Randolph, Jefferson and Jennings Counties to Indiana Marriage Index

FamilySearch has updated the Indiana marriage index 1811-1959 that is in progress. Entries from Randolph County, Jefferson County and Jennings County have been added; 45 of Indiana's 92 counties are now included in the index.

Genealogy Group To Meet At Hendricks County Library

The Danville Public Library in Hendricks County will host a meeting of the Genealogy Nuts group on Monday, August 13. The meeting will begin at 1:30 pm in the library’s program room. The Genealogy Nuts is a support group for genealogy enthusiasts, who meet regularly on the second Monday of each month. All levels of experience are welcomed. Members range from beginners to those who have researched for more than 40 years.

At this meeting, the library's Indiana Room staff and others will talk about what they learned at the Midwestern Roots conference. The discussion will also include genealogy and library news.

The meeting is free and open to the public - no registration is necessary.

Hendricks County Library To Discuss War of 1812 Records

Ron Darrah will present a program, "The Do-Over War: Genealogy and the War of 1812," on Saturday, August 25 at the Danville Public Library in Hendricks County. The program will begin at 10 am in the library’s program room. The War of 1812 Bicentennial has created new interest in this era. Darrah will review the origins and events of the war and explore the record types, sources, and repositories, especially the online sites. These records range from 1810-1850. Darrah is a retired school administrator and has been a genealogical researcher for over 25 years.

This is a free program, but space is limited and registration is required. Register under the Events link of the library’s website or call (317) 745-2604.

I'm looking for information on a Dr. Daniel HAWKINS b. 1819 Ky. in the 1850 census. He is in Kansas in 1860. His wife Mary A. and 5 of his children are all born in Indiana. The eldest child Elizabeth 1842 the youngest Isacc 1855. He died in Vernon Mo. 1883. I did find a US Irs tax assessment list 1862-1918 for a D Hawkins District 4. I am looking for information on Levi HOLLWAY. He died in White River, Hamilton, Indiana, in 1842. I know he was already living there in 1832 when he applied for his Rev War pension. Query: THOMPSON/HENDRICKS of Hancock County

Looking for any information regarding Jesse THOMPSON, b. abt 1818 in Kentucky (Estill County) and died in Pittsboro, Hendricks County, Indiana prior to 1900. His wife was Julia HENDRICKS THOMPSON and they had 21 children including those of his first marriage. In 1880 Jesse and family were in Pittsboro, but by 1900 the family had moved to Hancock County and Julie was widowed. Jesse is said to have died in Pittsboro. A search of the local cemeteries there didn't find his grave.

Genealogy for Night Owls at Indiana State Library

Genealogy for Night Owls is a unique and free event is happening at the Indiana State Library in Indianapolis on Wednesday, August 15 from 5:30 to 8:30 pm. This event will include opportunities to build your own family tree, library orientation and collection tours, Ask-An-Expert opportunities, door prizes, and more!

In addition to expert advice on conducting genealogy research, the State Library’s Conservator will be on hand to offer tips for preserving family heirlooms such as letters, photos, scrapbooks, and family Bibles. You are welcome to bring items for feedback on proper preservation, though State Library and State Archives staff CANNOT provide appraisals.

Research Tip: Family History Affiliate Libraries

FamilySearch's vast microfilm collection of genealogy records is well-known. What's less known is that this microfilm is no longer restricted to just Family History Centers - in fact, you can use the microfilm at a growing number of public and private libraries across the country. A library that applies to FamilySearch can be certified as a Family History Affiliate Library, signifying that they can receive the microfilm directly on loan from Salt Lake City.

Death Notices of Indianapolis Doctors (1862)

These death notices for 3 Indianapolis doctors were found in Transactions of the State Medical Society of Indiana, at a called session, held in the city of Indianapolis, Nov. 18 and 19, 1862 (Indianapolis: Elder, Harkness & Bingham, 1862):

DIED:
On the 11th of August, 1861, at his residence, in Indianapolis, of Bilious Fever, Charles Parry, M.D., in the 47th year of his age.

Dr. Parry had been actively engaged in the practice of his profession for more than a quarter of a century, and had been a member of the State Medical Society since its organization.

A good citizen, a superior physician, a distinguished surgeon – his death was a public loss.

On Wednesday, September 10th, 1862, of Pneumonia, Livingston Dunlap, M.D., aged 63 years.

Dr. Dunlap was a resident of Indianapolis for over forty years, was the first President of the Indiana State Medical Society, and at the time of his death was, no doubt, the oldest practitioner of medicine in the State.

He was a genial gentleman, a devoted friend, an accomplished physician, an honest man.

On the steamer John Roe, at Crump’s Landing, Tennessee River, on the 19th of March last, of Typhoid Pneumonia, Clay Brown, M.D., Assistant Surgeon 11th Regiment Indiana Volunteers, aged 36 years.

Underground Railroad To Be Discussed in Indianapolis

The Indiana Freedom Trails group will meet on Saturday, July 14 from 11 am to 1 pm at the Indiana Historical Society in Indianapolis. The meeting will be for the sharing of new information, research, exhibits and more about Indiana's Underground Railroad. It will be held in the Multi-Purpose Room on the canal level and it is free and open to the public (parking is off New York Street).
