I
am wondering if there are any materials available that might have pictures or
lists of employees of the farm machine manufacturer Rumeley Co. near
Laporte. In 1931 Allis-Chalmers bought Rumeley.
I believe that my grandparents both worked there. They
may also have met there. Also, I suspect that my grandfather, Earl L. Downing,
lost three fingers in a workplace accident at Rumeley. All suggestions will be
greatly appreciated. Thank you.

It's Rumely, and it was right in La Porte, occupying several city blocks. The La Porte County Public Library may have some resources, but your best bet is the La Porte County Historical Society. County historian Fern Eddy Schultz will know. Employment records are notoriously hard to find, but a careful reading of city directories might yield some clues. BTW, the public library may be an obstacle to your research, as it is closing many services as of May 12 for a months-long building project -- so if you can visit, do so soon. Good luck!
