La Porte County Court Records Index Published

Harold Henderson, author of the Midwestern Microhistory blog, has published In Court In La Porte, which is an every-name index to the earliest court records of La Porte County, Indiana. Specifically, it is an index to the people, places and businesses mentioned in Complete Record Book A (June 1833 to April 1837), Judgment Docket A (June 1833 to June 1838) and Minute Record A (June 1833 to October 1836).

This book is a finding aid to the original handwritten books, which are in the La Porte County Clerk's office. The court records offer mentions of fights, liquor sales, gambling parties, road building, timber cutting, slander, divorce, death, murder and – above all – debt and the repayment of debt. They may also provide unique information on the whereabouts of early settlers who do not appear in census or property records.

This soft-cover book is $20 (Indiana sales tax is included), with $5 for shipping & handling. 25% of the proceeds will be donated to the La Porte County, Indiana Genealogical Society. It can be purchased directly from the author at hhsh@earthlink.net.

The Indiana Genealogical Society thanks the Brown County Genealogical Society in Nashville, Indiana for their $50 donation to our War of 1812 $10,000 Matching Challenge. Coupled with IGS' match and Ancestry.com's match, their generous donations means that 400 more pages of pension files will be digitized!

OBITUARY: Former Tippecanoe County Resident Dies In Washington State (1917)

Obituary and family information submitted by Judy Ward Donley, great-granddaughter of Thomas Ward:

Thomas Ward was born January 1826 in Tippecanoe County, Indiana. His father John was from Ohio and his mother (name unknown) was from Indiana, according to the 1910 census for Washington state. The family moved to California at some point - in the 1870 census Thomas is in Placer, California, with his occupation listed as teamster. Thomas had a sister named Lottie (Ward) Howland.

from The Washingtonian, issue of February 20, 1917:

THOMAS WARD WAS RESIDENT 42 YEARS
Pioneer Dies At The Home of His Daughter in Pataha; Funeral Held Sunday

Thomas Ward, after continuous residence here for 42 years, died at the home of his daughter, Mrs. D.L. Palmer, in Pataha, last Saturday morning. Mr. Ward was nearing the close of his eightieth year and the immediate cause of his death was senile gangrene of the foot.

In company with the late George S. Harris, Mr. Ward came to Garfield county in 1875. Both settled upon land in the Scoggin neighborhood, south of the town. Mr. Ward made the farm his home until 1889, when he sold and moved to Pomeroy.

In 1879 he married Mrs. Carrie E. Pifug, who was a daughter of the late James Socggin. She died three years ago.

He was born in Tippecanoe, Indiana, and it is said that he made seven trips across the plains before making a permanent home.

He served as assistant quartermaster in the army during the Indian wars, when the troops were engaged in subduing the outbreaks in the “Badlands” of the Dakotas.

He is survived by one son, Frederick and a stepson, Charles Pifug, besides the daughter, Mrs. Palmer. Jesse, William and Howard Scoggin and Thomas Gilbanks were his brothers-in-law and Mrs. E.G. Teale and Mrs. Glover his sisters-in-law.

The funeral was held from the chapel on the Pataha flat, Sunday, the Rev. S. Bartlow conducting the services.

The pallbearers were Peter Gerhardt, L.F. Koenig, O.S. Williamson, E.L. Sanford, Jery Miller and Wilbur McFail.

Interment was made in the Chapel cemetery, where Mrs. Ward and one child were buried.

IGS Seeks Civilian Military Training Camp (CMTC) Materials

The Indiana Genealogical Society is seeking to build a manuscript collection focusing on the possibly 15,000 to 20,000 Hoosiers who participated in the Civilian Military Training Camps (CMTCs) between 1921 and 1940. In the aftermath of World War I, the National Defense Act of 1920 addressed the problem of providing experienced officers for an expanding army by creating a nationwide program of summer training courses for young men ages 17 to 24. These month-long camps (known as Civilian Military Training Camps) were held at 50 military locations across the nation from 1921 to 1940. Approximately 400,000 men participated over the life of the program.

Indiana residents would have mainly attended sessions at Camp Knox and Fort Thomas in Kentucky, and Fort Benjamin Harrison in Indianapolis, Indiana. Some of the other camp locations may also have included Hoosiers.

If you have materials, such as flyers, lists, photos, documents, or certificates, and would be able to scan, digitally photograph, or photocopy these items, the Indiana Genealogical Society would appreciate a copy. We will give credit for any materials published by the Society.

For additional information, or if you have any questions, please contact Ron Darrah at darrah@comcast.net. Thank you for your help!
