February 2014 IGS Newsletter Added To IGS Members-Only Area

The Indiana Genealogical Society has added the February 2014 issue of IGS Newsletter, the society's bi-monthly newsletter for IGS members, to the Members Only area. IGS members must login to the IGS Records section to download their copy.

This issue discusses contingency plans for winter weather, as well as guidelines for posting a good query. You can also read genealogy news items from around the state.

The newsletter is available for download in its regular size, as well as in a compressed version which downloads faster on slower Internet connections.

The newsletter is a premium database, accessible only to IGS members.

IGS Adds Boone County 1860 Mortality Schedule Index To Members-Only

The Indiana Genealogical Society has added an index of the 1860 Boone County mortality schedule to the County Records section of our Members Only area:

--Index to Mortality Schedule for Boone County, Indiana (1860)

Mortality schedules were special schedules to the federal census that were taken in 1850, 1860, 1870 and 1880. The 1860 mortality schedule listed those who had died between 1 June 1859 and 31 May 1860.

This is a premium database, accessible only to IGS members.

The Indiana Genealogical Society now has 1,214 databases in the Members Only area. Each of Indiana's 92 counties has at least 4 databases.

The Indiana Genealogical Society has added 2 databases about World War II officials from southern Indiana to the County Records section of our Members Only area:

Starke County Genealogical Society To Discuss Technology for Genealogists

The Starke County Genealogical Society of Indiana will meet on Monday, March 17 at 6:30 pm at the Starke County Public Library (152 W. Culver, Knox, IN). There will be a free program, "Technology for the Genealogist," given by Marlene Polster and Linda Novotny. Polster and Novotny are staff of the genealogy department of the Porter County Public Library in Valparaiso; they will discuss the various equipment (cameras, scanners, etc.) that can aid genealogists in their research.

Hamilton County Library in Noblesville To Hold Genealogy Roundtable

The Hamilton East Public Library in Noblesville will hold a genealogy roundtable on Tuesday, February 11 from 2:15 to 3:15 pm in the library's genealogy classroom. Participants will discuss what's on their genealogy "bucket list" - what genealogy conference would you most like to attend? What ancestor would you most like to meet? What photo would you most like to find?

This is an informal discussion group - no registration is required.

Allen County Public Library To Discuss Slave History

The Allen County Public Library in Fort Wayne will hold a free program, "W.P.A. Slave Narratives and Race, Slavery and Free Blacks: What Can You Find?", on Thursday, February 13 from 7 to 8 pm in the library's Meeting Room B. The program will be presented by Roberta Ridley, and is part of the library's celebration of Black History Month.

JOHN BYBEE (c1790-1867), to KOSCIUSKO CO. by 1840. Sons: Washington 1809, Joseph 1811, John 1813, George 1815, Pleasant 1819, Nathan 1820, and Wesley 1826.

BYRAM LEE BYBEE (1799-1864), to CLAY CO. by 1840. Sons: John M. 1829, David B. 1832, Robert L. 1838, and Byram L. 1841.

LaPorte County Genealogical Society To Discuss Family History Videography

The LaPorte County, Indiana Genealogical Society will meet on Tuesday, February 11 at 7 pm at the LaPorte City Parks & Recreation Department Office Building (250 Pine Lake Ave., LaPorte IN). Pam Pulice will present a program entitled "Family History Through the Eyes of a Videographer." The program will include a showing of her 17-minute film, "Peggy's Memoir: Recollections of an English Ward Bride," and a discussion of how family history can come to life on the screen. Pulice is an advocate for preserving family history who helps people preserve their stories on DVD and share them on the web.

The meeting is free and open to the public.

The Indiana Genealogical Society has added an index of the 1860 Hendricks County mortality schedule to the County Records section of our Members Only area:

Howard County Genealogical Society To Discuss War of 1812 Battle

The Howard County Genealogical Society and the Society of the War of 1812 of the State of Indiana will hold a joint meeting from 10 am to noon on Saturday, February 1 in Rooms A and B of the Kokomo-Howard County Public Library.

Stanley Steiner from the Society of the War of 1812 in the State of Indiana will present a program, "Battle of the Mississinewa," which occurred near present-day Marion, Indiana.

Allen County Public Library To Discuss Photo Restoration Software

The Genealogy Center of the Allen County Public Library in Fort Wayne has some spaces left in its "Basics of Adobe Elements Workshop" class, a 4-part class that meets on Mondays in February from 6 to 7 pm in the library's Computer Classroom. In this class, you'll learn the basics of Adobe Elements software and discover how to use it to restore digital images of old photos. This class will provide hands-on instruction - participants are encouraged to bring a flash drive containing copies of their own family photos, to work on during class.

Allen County Public Library To Discuss Genealogy Apps

The Genealogy Center of the Allen County Public Library in Fort Wayne will hold a free class, "Apps & Programs for Genealogy," on Wednesday, February 12 at 2:30 pm in the library's Meeting Room C. This class (which is the last WinterTech class of the season) will highlight the many types of applications for smartphones and tablets – some also for computers – that can be used for genealogical purposes. This class will be an overview, showing just a few examples of each type of application, although information will be provided on how and where to find many more. Some examples that will be featured are: to-do lists, notes applications, journal applications, calendars, Siri and Google Voice, maps, photo applications and more.

IGS Adds 48 Digital Files of Hendricks County Probate Records

The Indiana Genealogical Society has added 48 digitized files of Hendricks County probate records to our website. The newest files were digitized thanks to the help of the Allen County Public Library in Fort Wayne and cover these surnames:

PLASTER, PLASTERS, PLUMMER, POAK, POE, POLAND, POPE, PORTER, POULTER, POUNDS, POWEL, POWELL, PRICE, PRITCHETT, PRUETT, RAGAN, RAINS, RAMSEY, RATLIFF, RAWLINGS, RAY, REAGAN, REDDINGTON, REDMOND, REED, RENNARD, RESER, REYNOLDS, RHOADES, RICE, RICHARDS, RICHARDSON, RIGGEN, RIGNEY, RILEY and RINER.

There are now 754 Hendricks County probate records online. These files are free to the public and are part of our Records Preservation Project.

Unfolding and organizing of the probate records is continuing - you can help out by attending our next work session on Saturday, February 22 at Plainfield Public Library from 10 am to 4 pm (read more).
