IGS Updates African-American Settlements Database

The Indiana Genealogical Society has updated the database Individuals Associated with Indiana’s African-American Settlements (1817-1930) in the African-American Records section of Members-Only. There are now over 12,000 entries in the database.

This database is being compiled by Dawne Slater-Putt, CG and is part of a larger effort to study Indiana’s African-American settlements from their earliest days through about 1930.

The database includes the individual’s name, approximate year of birth and date of death (if known), and the names of the townships and counties with which the individual was associated. Women are cross-referenced under their maiden names. The database also includes links (when available) to newspaper articles, tombstone photos, marriage records and other source materials.

This database is free to the public--no member login is required to view it. It is being shared with the Indiana Genealogical Society and the Allen County Public Library's Genealogy Center.

The Indiana Genealogical Society has 440 databases in the Members Only area, covering all 92 Indiana counties.

Noblesville Library To Discuss HeritageQuest Online

The Hamilton East Public Library in Noblesville will hold a workshop, "Using HeritageQuest Online," on Wednesday, November 17 from 9:30 am to noon in the library's Computer Training Lab. Participants will learn the most effective ways to search for ancestors using the databases available on HeritageQuest Online. The Hamilton East Public Library in Noblesville will hold a genealogy roundtable on Tuesday, November 9 from 2:15 to 3:15 pm in the library's Genealogy Classroom. This is an informal discussion group where you are free to bring your own topics to share, or just soak up the knowledge and experience of others. No registration is required.

Boone County Society To Hold Annual Meeting in Lebanon

The Boone County Genealogical Society will hold their annual meeting on Tuesday, November 16 at 6:30 pm at the Lebanon Public Library. Awards will be presented and the new officers will be introduced. The meeting is open to the public.

Steuben County:
--Index of Deaths in Steuben County, Indiana (1831-1938)

This is a free database, accessible to the public. It was submitted by the Carnegie Public Library of Steuben County as part of the 2 for 92 Project, where IGS is committed to adding at least 2 databases for each of Indiana's 92 counties.

NOTE: The death dates in this database are scattered, but they range as early as 1831 and as late as 1938.

The Indiana Genealogical Society has 439 databases in the Members Only area, covering all 92 Indiana counties. More databases will be added over time.

Allen County Library To Discuss WeRelate.org

The Allen County Public Library in Fort Wayne will hold a class, "Preserving Your Genealogy Research and Documents Using WeRelate," on Wednesday, November 10 at 2:30 pm in the library's Globe Room. This class will explore how using WeRelate.org can prevent the loss of your genealogical research, photos and documents. You'll learn how to upload and download GEDCOM files, documents and photos.

Noblesville Library To Discuss Free Internet Sites

The Hamilton East Public Library in Noblesville will hold a class, "Find Your Ancestors Using Free Internet Sites," on Saturday, November 6 from 9:30 am to 12:30 pm in the library's Genealogy Classroom. As repositories and various organizations are turning to digitizing as a means of preserving documents, many items are becoming available online, sometimes for free. Searching for the cemetery where JOSEPH ROUSE is buried. He was born 15 Feb 1750 in Culpeper, Virginia and died 1840-1850 in Warren Township, Indianapolis, Marion County, Indiana. He arrived in Indianapolis in 1833 from Boone County, Kentucky with his grandson, JOEL ALBERT ROUSE (1814 - 1897) and his wife, the former Sarah "Sally" Pitcher (1814-1847). Joseph's name on his Revolutionary War record is spelled Rousch, but the name was originally spelled RAUSCH.

Marion County To Hold Genealogy Conference in Indianapolis

The Genealogical Society of Marion County will hold their 15th annual genealogy conference on Saturday, November 13 from 9 am to 4:30 pm at the Indianapolis Senior Center. The theme is "Indy's Ethnic Heritage," with sessions on Scottish, German, Native American and Catholic ancestors. Query: YARNELL/BELL of Indianpolis

Looking for the date, place and obituary of Robert S. Yarnell b. 1832 and Clara (Bell) b. 1884 Yarnell. They both were born in Jefferson County, OH.

They moved to Indianapolis in the early 1900's where Robert became a railroad postal Clerk.
