Query: VANCE family of Indianapolis

VANCE/BOYD—Seeking information on the VANCE family that lived in Indianapolis, Marion County, Indiana in the late 1800’s. Thomas Vance was born 1820-1825 in Pennsylvania or Ireland and died May 1893. He is buried in Crown Hill Cemetery in Indianapolis. He married Susannah BOYD (born May 1827 in Pennsylvania, New York or Ireland; died December 1909; buried in Crown Hill Cemetery) and they had children:

--John J. Vance (born about 1851 in Pennsylvania; died 17 October 1892 in Indianapolis; buried in Crown Hill Cemetery)
--Rebecca J. Vance (born February 1852 in Pennsylvania; died June 1912; buried in Crown Hill Cemetery)
--Hugh L. (or S.) Vance (born about 1855 in Pennsylvania; died after 1870)
--George Washington Vance (born 1858 in Indianapolis; died in 1891, probably in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania)—married Margaret Jane DEAN (born November 1867 in Ireland)
--William H. Vance (born December 1859 in Indiana; died after 1910)—married Blanche SCHMUCK (born December 1863 in Indiana; died 1900-1910) on May 26, 1887 in Marion County
--Charles Richard “Richard” Vance (born about 1862 in Indiana; died after 1899)

Thomas Vance was a cabinetmaker and the family was in Indianapolis beginning with the 1860 census. They lived at 623 East Vermont Street (I have a photo—dated 20 August 1899--of Susanna and 4 of the children standing in front of the house).

George Washington Vance and wife Margaret had a daughter, Rebecca Florence Vance (born 17 December 1887 in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania). Rebecca was my grandmother and she married Joseph Trucksess HENRY. After George Washington Vance died, his wife remarried about 1897 to Fenwick FIELDING (born March 1865 in Canada).

Any information will be greatly appreciated.

  1. Hi,

I'm starting to try to collate some of the Scottish, Irish, American and other overseas Vances in the hope of finally sorting out the connection between them/you and my family of Vans of Barnbarroch. You may be familiar with the work I have already done on the Scottish side of the family which can be found at http://homepages.rootsweb.com/~vfarch and with my published paper, "The Origin of the Irish Vances".

I am co-ordinating my work as far as I can with that of the Vance DNA research project - for further details of that, see http://www.vancegenealogy.com/index.php. I would urge any male Vances to take a look at the website and consider having a DNA test done as this seems to be a potentially useful tool in untangling the truth of the matter.

I would also be very grateful if any of you Vance descendants would be prepared to share your data with me, preferably as a gedcom file to save me re-typing it all.

Best wishes to all members of the Vans/Vance family,

    Jamie Vans of Barnbarroch.
