Cemetery Restoration in Montgomery County

The Genealogy Club of Montgomery County, Indiana (http://www.cdpl.lib.in.us/lh/geneclub/geneclub.html) has been working on cleaning and restoring O'Neall Cemetery since 2003, with major work coming in the last couple of years. The cemetery is located in Ripley Township, Montgomery County, near the town of Yountsville.

The earliest recorded burial was for James D. McClelland (1828) and the latest was for Michael Fruits (1912). Over 100 people are known to be buried there, including 9 veterans of the Civil War, 4 from the War of 1812, and 1 from the Mexican War.

Trees and excess brush have been removed, and club members have attended training offered by the Indiana Department of Natural Resources and the Indiana Historical Society on how to properly clean, restore and reset tombstones.

Donations of labor, materials or money to help offset the costs of this ongoing project are welcome. For more information, contact Dian Moore at the Crawfordsville District Public Library--phone (765) 362-2242 ext. 4; e-mail gen@cdpl.lib.in.us
