We have an old headstone mystery here in central Indiana.
Janna Bennett of the Children's Museum of Indianapolis would like an identification
for a stone in their possession.
Says
Janna, "We received it from the Marion County Sheriff’s Department in
1990. I hope your genealogy sleuths and the internet can solve this mystery!
Some of the questions are these: Who is Datee
Ballinger? Why did the Sheriff's Department have her headstone? Where is she
buried?

Datee Ballenger/Ballinger is listed with her parents Edward and Margaret in the 1850 and 1860 censuses in Perry Township, Marion County, and the Genealogical Society of Marion County's cemetery listings show her to be buried at Round Hill Cemetery (it’d be interesting to see if there was still a stone there, or if what the Children’s Museum has disappeared from the cemetery at some point or was a duplicate made by the stonemason). Margaret Ballenger is listed as the head of household in the 1870 & 1880 censuses in Johnson County, town of Franklin.
ReplyDeleteThe family also appears to have a connection to the southern part of Hendricks County. There is an Edward Ballenger 1802-1867 buried at Iron/Miles Cemetery in Liberty Township, outside Belleville. There are several entries in a Hendricks County probate order books index regarding heirs of Edward Ballenger. In the Indiana Genealogical Society's Hendricks County probate records project, there is a folder (not yet digitized) from 1869 for a guardianship minor of a Data/Datee Ballenger (along with John S. Bainey & Edward Bainey). NOTE: Margaret's 1880 census entry shows an Edward Bayney age 25 in Margaret’s household, so the Baineys may be grandchildren.
