Bartholomew County Collection Damaged By Fire
A Christmas Eve fire at the United Way building in Columbus, Indiana has also affected the Bartholomew County Historical Society. According to a news report, the fire in the building (which was home to 27 non-profit agencies) also caused significant damage to the society's collection which was housed there. As many as 75,000 pieces of memorabilia may have been destroyed; some items in their collection, including old photos, are stored in their museum and thus were not affected by the fire.

Query: HUDSON/HUTSON/PERKINS/SHAVER of Fayette and Hancock Counties
I am looking for more information on a William Hudson/Hutson. The last census I can find is for 1860 in Columbia, Fayette County, Indiana. He is listed as age 67 born in Pennsylvania. However, in the previous census it says he was born in Virginia. An 1880 census entry for his son Thomas declares his father's birthplace to be Virginia. In the 1860 census William's wife Anna is age 60 and born in Virginia. I find her in the 1880 census in Brown, Hancock County, Indiana as a widow with her married daugher Harriete Perkins. I can't find where William and Anna got married or any other information. Where he is buried?
Children of William & Anna Hutson/Hudson:

2. Thomas Harrison b. 1832 Orange Township, Fayette County, Indiana, m. Cynthia Harriet Shaver 27 Jan. 1856 in Fayette County, Indiana

Query: ALLEN/FOSTER of Delaware County
My grandfather James Allen was born in Indiana on February 28, 1878 (maybe in Albany, Delaware County, Indiana). I am trying to determine who his father and mother were with only these limited facts. His father was supposed to be an Irish born immigrant but I can find nothing in the US census that would identify them together. James was married in 1902 to Minnie Foster if that's helpful.
Thank you for your consideration.

Query: HALL of 5th Indiana Battery
I am looking for information on my great-grandfather Nelson Wesley Hall who served in the 5th Indiana Battery. Do you have a photograph of the 5th Battery of Indiana? If NOT, do you have a photograph of any soldier of this battery as I would like to include a picture of their uniform? Do you have information and photos on what kind of weapons these men used?
"The battery was organized at Indianapolis, Indiana and mustered in for a three year enlistment on November 22, 1861. It was mustered in under the command of Captain Peter Simonson. The battery was attached to 3rd Division, Army of the Ohio, to September 1862."

Query: COLLINS of Dubois and Miami Counties
I am looking for an ancestor who seems to have left very few clues behind. All I know is he was born in 1833 in Indiana. His name is William J. Collins, and according to a narration by my grandmother, his father's name was William also. He ended up in Gilroy, California, with a stop in Lane County, Oregon. I am his great-great-granddaughter (he married Adeline Duncan, they had a son Albert, who had a daughter Effie, who had a son Albert who is my father.)
The 1850 census for Columbia Township, Dubois County, Indiana has a William/William father/son possible match, with the son aged 17.
I found one other William Collins aged 17 in the 1850 Indiana census, in Miami County, the township starts with C, but I can't read the rest. It has a pre-printed page #124 on the document.
I understand this may be pure coincidence, however, is there a genealogist who would have access to both county records that you could put me in touch with?
Thank you.

Northwest Indiana Society Adds Lake County Databases
The Northwest Indiana Genealogical Society, which represents Lake County and Porter County, has added two new databases for Lake County to the Online Archives section of their website:
Guardian Bond Books, Lake County (1919-1934)
This Index was created from one book which was located at the Lake County Government Center in Crown Point, Indiana. The index will provide you with the guardian’s name(s), surety company’s name, the deceased name, the heir's name (or who the guardianship was set up for), the attorney’s name, and the date of the judgment. In some cases the society has added comments. They have also listed the case or the docket number and page number (if one was located). A copy of the bond will also include the bond amount and the relationships of the person listed in the bond, clerks, and the judge's name. By no means does this index represent all of the legal guardianships that were set up in Lake County, Indiana. This book was the only book of bonds that has been located at this time. There is an order form and directions on how you can send for a copy of this record.
Register of Trained Nurses in Lake County (1916-1943)
The information in this database will not lead a genealogist to a copy of the registration, but it will verify that an ancestor was a nurse, and might help locate where the individual resided during a certain timeframe. From this information, a check of city directories might show the person’s address, whether the residence was owned or rented, and the address of the hospital at which he or she was employed. If the residence was owned, the Recorder’s office should have a deed for the property. In those rare instances where a marriage was indicated, the Clerk’s office or the database of marriages on the NWIGS website can be checked for a marriage date, which can then be used to obtain the marriage application and certificate. In some cases there are indications of the nurse’s religion, which might suggest where to search for church records.

Query: JOHNSON/GUY/BROWNEN/BOAS/BOSS of Morgan and Owen and Switzerland Counties
My third great grandmother, Sarah Johnson, was an orphan. She was born in 1839 in Indiana (possibly Morgan County) and died 01 May 1895 in Indiana (most likely near Gosport in Owen County). She married James Guy on 28 Nov 1853 in Morgan County, Indiana. Based on census records, I believe that she might have been raised by John and Elizabeth Brownen (There is a Sarah Johnson living with the Brownens in Morgan County in 1850). How might I found out more information about adoptions during this time period?
Another of my third great grandmothers (Elizabeth Boas/Boss b. 1849) was also adopted (in Kentucky before 1860) and was raised in Switzerland County, Indiana. Are there publications or records on such matters?
Thank you for your help.

Query: BENNETT
Leonard K BENNETT appears in the 1930 census in Detroit, aged 43 (b. England) in the company of his wife, Ruth, age 32, b. Indiana (and both parents b. Indiana), and stepson, Robert W Bennett, age 14, b Michigan (parents, confusingly, b England and Michigan). Leonard gives his age at first marriage as 43. As his birthday was 6 March, it means that (if he were telling the truth) he and Ruth were married between 6 March and 1 April 1930.
I have contacted the relevant authorities in Michigan, and the only marriage of a Leonard BENNETT to a Ruth, within a couple of years of that date, was 20 June 1931 in Ann Arbor, but the groom's father's name was not correct, and the (somewhat smudgy-font) ages were too young.
If anyone actually recognises my combination of names, dates and places, I would be delighted to hear from them.

State Archives Launches New Site
The Indiana State Archives has a new website for Indiana research. Located at www.indianadigitalarchives.org, the new site currently has about a dozen searchable databases.
Although still a rudimentary resource and at present without any images, the site has great growth potential. Researchers are encouraged to check out this resource periodically to look for changes and additions. Congratulations to Archives manager Alan January, his staff and volunteers for getting this new site up and running.
We do not know if databases that are currently on the State Archives site or the State Library site will be migrated to this new site, but hopefully that will be in future plans.

Query: RODECAP/McLAUGHLIN of Henry and Madison Counties
I am having a hard time finding my great grandfather David Solomon Rodecap's obituary. I know he was born in Middletown, Indiana approximately 1865, and he died in August of 1927 or 28. I believe he died in Muncie, Indiana. I am also looking for any information on Charles McLaughlin, or his wife Rebecca. I believe they lived in or around Henry county Indiana. I believe Charles died in 1878 in Madison county, Indiana. I am looking for an obituary on either of them. They are my great grandfather's in-laws.
Any help is appreciated.
Thank you.

Query: MEDARIS/PIERCE
Looking for anything on my great grandfather. Willing to hire a researcher if need be.
I have him in the 1895 Iowa Census;
Jno. H. Medaris, born 1870, Indiana.
He was married to Clara Pierce and living in Des Moines, Polk County, Iowa with a young daughter, Marie Ione Medaris, b. July, 1894. He was dead by 1896 or 1897.
Looking for birth certificate or parents names etc. No idea what county or Town. Also have no marriage certificate or death certificate. His wife re-married in 1897 and is listed as Clara Medaris, 'widow' on the marriage certificate.
Is his name 'John' or 'Jonathan', and what does 'H' stand for?
Anything would be of help, especially tieing him in to some of the many Medaris family links in the State of Indiana. Might it be Owen County?
Thank you.
Long standing family mystery.

Query: SONGER/NEWCOMBE of Delaware County
I have this photo that was taken May 30, 1937 in Albany, Delaware County, Indiana of Walter Manford Songer and Martha Newcombe. They appeared to be a couple in love. Walter died at the age of 19. He was a basketball star and played in many areas around Albany, but I don’t think he lived there. Martha would be around 85 years old. I would like to give this picture to her and talk about some old times with her.
I would appreciate anyone's help in trying to locate Martha Newcombe.

Query: SMITH/ROSE/ROBERTS/ROBERT of Laporte County
I am searching for my grandfather, Francis Smith. His obituary in the Great Bend Tribune says he was born in LaPorte, Indiana on April 10, 1874. He worked as a carpenter, traveling the country, and came to Kansas where he helped build many of the houses in Ellinwood. He came to help my great-grandfather, Charles Rose, build his house at Raymond, KS. This is where he met my grandmother. They were married and had 3 children. I have found his record in 1930 at Raymond, Ks with my grandmother on the U.S. Federal Census. But other than that I can't find any real firm information on him. He died on June 21, 1934 at Raymond and was buried at the Lakin-Commanche Cemetery in Ellinwood, KS. His obituary says he had 2 brothers and 1 sister in Indiana.
We were always told that he had changed his name, but my Mom and Grandma didn't say much otherwise. I had been doing some research on the Rose side of the family and took it out to my uncle. He gave me a picture of my grandpa Smith on a tractor and binder. That's the only picture we have of him. He also told me a story he recalled that Francis had changed his name (probably from Roberts or something like that) when he was 14. Something happened with his family and some farmland was given or sold to someone else, rather than to Francis and/or his brother(s). He then changed his name to Francis Smith and worked throughout the country as a carpenter.
The 1930 Census says that the marriage in 1927 was his 1st. I've searched through many census records and can't find any Francis Smith/Roberts/Robert that is a carpenter and isn't married. We don't know his parents or siblings first names either.
I have a copy of their Marriage Certificate from 1927, but that's all. Sometime, I want to go to Topeka to see if I can get a copy of the Death Certificate in case it may reveal a little more information.
Please let me know if there's any place else I could search for information. Any help would be greatly appreciated.
Thanks very much,
Jim Loesch

Query: HORWELL Of White County
I am trying to trace a William Henry Horwell, who was born in England 29/9/1862 and died in Wolcott, White County, Indiana 22/4/1936. He married an unknown in Watseka, Iroquois County, Illinois. He had at least one son named Charles Henry Horwell, born 6/8/1893 in Piper City, Ford County, Illinois. By his date of birth and his marriage I know he emigrated to the United States sometime between 1862 and 1890. I know this is a large time frame but if anyone can help a confused Kiwi Boy it would be great.

Query: WARD/SMITH/PARKER of St. Joseph County
I am looking for confirmation of my great grandmother's parents. My great grandmother's name is Emma Leona Ward and was born in St. Joseph County (South Bend) Indiana on May 1, 1881. I believe her parents to be Lilly Smith and Nathan Ward, who married sometime in 1880 in St. Joseph County and divorced shortly after. I am unable to find a census to confirm their cohabitation and child. Lilly Smith later married a man named William Parker who immigrated to Canada in 1900. They are listed on the 1901 Canadian Census as living beside Emma and her husband. Any confirmation that Lilly Smith and Nathan Ward were actually her parents would be greatly appreciated!!

Query: BUTLER/BEATTY of Wayne, Marion and Shelby Counties
My great great uncle James Butler married Mary Beatty October 15, 1885 in Richmond, Wayne County, Indiana. He was a widower, born in New York in 1857. His parents were from Ireland. In 1900 James and Mary were in Shelbyville, Shelby County, Indiana, and in 1910 and 1920 they were in Ward 13, Indianapolis, Marion County, Indiana. In the 1917 city directory for Indianapolis, Mary is listed as married, but James is not with them. We are not sure what happened. Query: OHMIE/BAUCH of Benton and Jasper Counties
I’m looking for information on Wilhelm Freiedrich Ohmie married Karaline Katharine Helene Bauch in Germany in 1883. They immigrated to the US and arrived February 6, 1884 at the Port of Baltimore. They settled in Gilo Township in Benton County, Indiana. Their first child was born May 2, 1894, Heinrich August Ohmie. They may have been tenant farmers. Wilhelm applied for Naturalization papers on October 13, 1886. They relocated in Remington in Jasper County prior to 1886. It is believed there was a child born that died in 1886 or 1887 because Maria Anna Ohmie was born April 9, 1888 and it was recorded as the 3rd child. Maria Anna was delivered by M. F. Reigle in Remington. The fourth child Johann Deitrich Ohmie was born Jan 23, 1880 in Remington. They may have been tenant farmers there also. It is believed they left the area around 1891 after the harvest. I have been given this information and need to know how to verify it with documentation. Or where and when the 2nd child was born, lived, died and buried.
Can someone help me or guide me? Provide charges? I have a map that shows where the property was and itemized chattel mortgages applied for and what was held as collateral.

IGS Updates African-American Settlements Database
The Indiana Genealogical Society has updated the database, Individuals Associated with Indiana’s African-American Settlements (1817-1930) in the African-American Records section of Members-Only. This database is being compiled by Dawne Slater-Putt, CG and is part of a larger effort to study Indiana’s African-American settlements from their earliest days through about 1930.
The database includes the individual’s name, approximate year of birth and date of death (if known), and the names of the townships and counties with which the individual was associated. Women are cross-referenced under their maiden names. The database also includes links (when available) to newspaper articles and tombstone photos.
