The Indianapolis Public Library will hold a genealogy workshop about using Sanborn Fire Insurance maps on Sunday, January 26 from 2 to 3 pm. These highly-detailed maps include symbols, labels and colors which describe all bits of information related to fire risk about a structure and its neighbors. Today, these maps are used by scholars and researchers in such fields as history, genealogy, urban geography, architectural history and preservation, ethnic studies, and urban archaeology. This workshop is free and open to the public - no registration is required. It will be held at the library's Central branch, and is presented by the IUPUI University Library Center for Digital Scholarship.
NOTE: This workshop will also be given at the library's Irvington branch on Tuesday, February 18 from 10:30 to 11:30 am.
