The Monroe County History Center will hold a free program, "Smithville History," on Thursday, July 11 at 7 pm at historic Redmen's Hall in Smithville. Smithville is a town in southern Monroe County that was laid out in 1851 and grew rapidly with the establishment of the railroad in 1852-1853, but never recovered after the Great Depression. This program will be held at Redmen's Hall, which was restored in 1990-1991; after the program, attendees will be given access to the community museum and introduced to some of the items in the collection that recall the rich history of the area. This program is free and open to the public.
Driving directions: Redmen's Hall is located on Strain Ridge Road. On new Highway 37 South, look for a Smithville Road marker and then follow it 2 to 3 miles to a stop sign at Strain Ridge Road. Turn right and you will see Redmen's Hall on the left - it is a 2-story, red brick building. Parking is located across the alley from the side entrance.
