My Great Grandfather, William Bowden Lyons, was born in New Albany, IN. in 1841. He was raised there and enlisted in the Union Army at the outbreak of the Civil War and served until his regiment (59th Indiana Infantry) was dissolved in July, 1865 in Louisville, KY. He returned to New Albany, then moved to Gosport per the Federal Census of 1870. He was a railroader since 1860 and returned to that occupation after the War.
He had moved to El Dorado, Kansas,
by 1880 per that year's Federal census, then to Sedalia, Missouri. There is a
family story that he participated in the 1890 GAR National Encampment in St.
Louis in 1890. There was also a GAR honor guard when he died in Colorado
(visiting his daughter) to take him back to Sedalia in 1899.
I am trying to locate some proof
that he was active in the GAR. He sometimes went by "W.B. Lyons"Thank you for your help
