Want to get a glimpse at what life was like in the mid-1800's? Stop by the Danville Public Library in Hendricks County, Indiana on Saturday, April 6 any time from 9 am to 4 pm to help the Indiana Genealogical Society unfold and organize some of Hendricks County's probate records.
This is part of our continuing effort to preserve and digitize Hendricks County's early probate records, which are currently stored in the courthouse basement. Unfolding and organizing the documents is crucial preparation for the end goal - being digitized and put online for free access on our website. Since this project began, over 2,700 probate records have been worked on, and over 700 of them are online so far.
You don't have to have a family connection to Hendricks County - working with these records can be addictive! These records include receipts from doctors for making house calls, orders for tombstones (including the inscriptions to be written on them), and even original documents for Civil War service and a land purchase from the federal government.
