State Library To Host Civil War Symposium

The Indiana State Library in Indianapolis will host the fourth annual Civil War Study Group Symposium all day on Saturday, September 17. Papers will be presented by:

--S. Chandler Lighty, Papers of Abraham Lincoln, " 'Able and Efficient Services:' Lew Wallace and Indiana's Mobilization for War, April 15-23, 1861"

--Richard F. Nation, Eastern Michigan University, "Indiana Agriculture and the Civil War"

--Steven J. Ramold, Eastern Michigan University, "Boys of '61: The Integration of Citizen-soldiers into the Union Army"

--Daniel W. Stowell, Papers of Abraham Lincoln, "Mobilizing Hoosiers: Abraham Lincoln's Indiana Appointments in 1861"

In preparation for lively discussion, symposium participants are encouraged to read Mark R. Wilson's The Business of Civil War: Military Mobilization and the State, 1861-1865 (Johns Hopkins University Press, 2006).

Historians are encouraged to participate in this day of illuminating scholarship. The CWSG strives to be a relaxed forum for open discussion and debate on important issues relating to the American Civil War.

To help cover the cost of breakfast and lunch, there will be a $20 registration fee.
