IGS Adds October Newsletter To Members-Only
The Indiana Genealogical Society has now added the October 2009 issue of the IGS Newsletter to the IGS Records section of Members Only. The issue contains the latest "Once A Hoosier..." entries and queries, as well as information on the various events around the state celebrating October as Family History Month.

African American Group To Discuss Sanborn Maps
The Indiana African American Genealogy Group will meet on Saturday, October 17 from noon to 3 pm at the Indiana State Library in Indianapolis. Kristi Palmer will present a program on Sanborn Maps from noon to 1:30 pm, and from 1:40 to 3 pm there will be a Sankofa session (Sankofa is an Andrinka symbol meaning to reach back and learn). Marriage Indexing: Progress Report
The latest progress report for the Indiana Marriage Indexing Project shows that volunteers have completed the batches of records that were available for Carroll County and have almost finished the batches available for Ohio County. They have also started indexing the records available for Boone County and Harrison County:

I am trying to find the Will of a John T. Roberts b. 22 Nov 1779 in Surry Co., NC, d 20 Sept 1852 in Martinsburg, Washington Co., IN. My ancestor is William Mill Creek Roberts who lived in Harrison Co., IN and married a Nancy Miller, 2 Mar 1830 and had 4 or 5 children born in Harrison Co. The family later moved to CA. Query: FAILOR of Stark County Ohio and Jefferson County IN
I'm trying to locate the location of burial for Charles Failor. He was born about 1843 in Stark County, Ohio, and died in 1863 in Madison, Jefferson County, IN. Charles was a Civil War Veteran, wounded in action, he was returned home to Madison where he died from his injuries.

IGS Publishes Vigo County 1890 Soldiers Enrollment List
The Indiana Genealogical Society has now published an index to the 1890 soldiers enrollment list for Vigo County. It has been added to the other indexes that are available for purchase in the Shop section of the IGS website.
The soldiers enrollment lists enumerated the veterans of all past wars (including the Civil War) who were living in that county in 1890. If the veteran was deceased, the list included information on their widows and children. The Indiana Genealogical Society's indexes contain detailed information from these lists and are published on CD-ROM. IGS has compiled indexes for 63 counties thus far.

The Indiana Genealogical Society has added a database for Clinton County to the County Records section of its Members Only area:
--Graduates of Kirklin High School, Clinton County, Indiana (1901-1927)--alumni of Kirklin High School for the years 1901-1927, along with their residence as of 1927, as listed in a yearbook. Kirklin High School was later consolidated into Clinton Central High School.
This is a premium database, accessible only to IGS members. It is part of the 2 for 92 Project, where IGS will develop a minimum of two genealogical databases for each of the 92 counties in Indiana and post them to the Members Only area.

The Lebanon Public Library will hold a class on Family Tree Builder software on Tuesday, October 13 from 6:30 to 7:30 pm in the library's Ralph W. Stark Heritage Center. Kevin Pleasant will offer instruction in how to use the software, which is free and produced by MyHeritage.com. Family Tree Builder software includes charts and maps and support for private family websites. This class is free but registration is required--to register, phone (765) 482-3460 ext. 261.

The Northwest Indiana Genealogical Society has added some Lake County databases to their website:
--Index to Will Book "A", Lake County, Indiana--this is an index to the first will book for the county, and it covers the years 1839-1870. There is also a form provided for you to order a copy of the will directly from the county.
--Boyd Home Tourist Records, Merrillville, Lake County, Indiana--this is an index of the guest register for the Boyd Home in Merrillville. The guest register provides a record of the names and hometowns of those travelers who spent a night in Merrillville, Indiana, as they journeyed along the Lincoln Highway in the late 1920's and early 1930's.
These databases are located in the Online Archives section of the society's website and are free to the public.

Petition Circulating To Save Library of Michigan
The Records Preservation and Access Committee (which is sponsored by the Federation of Genealogical Societies and the National Genealogical Society) is circulating an online petition urging the Michigan legislature to overturn the governor's Executive Order 2009-36, which would abolish the Library of Michigan and disperse its collection. The executive order is set to go into effect on October 1st. The state's Senate has already voted to overturn the order; the House of Representatives must also do so.
The online petition can be found at http://www.PetitionOnline.com/RPAC2009/petition.html--you do not have to be a Michigan resident in order to sign it. The Michigan Genealogical Council has more information on the issue at http://www.mimgc.org/LOM.html

Hands-On Cemetery Restoration Workshop in Bloomington
The Monroe County Historical Society will lead a hands-on restoration of White Oak Cemetery in Bloomington on Saturday, October 10 from 9 am to 3:30 pm. Restoration specialist John Walters will show how to clean, repair and reset stones. Registration for the workshop is $25 for MCHS members, $30 for non-members, and includes a morning snack and lunch. Registration is limited to 25 people, and the deadline to register is September 10th.

Jeannie Regan-Dinius from the Indiana Department of Natural Resources' Division of Historic Preservation and Archaeology will be the presenter.

IGS Adds African-American Databases To Members-Only
The Indiana Genealogical Society has added databases to the African-American Records section of its Members Only area:
--African-American Veterans in Clark County, Indiana (1890)
--African-American Veterans in Harrison County, Indiana (1890)
--African-American Veterans in Randolph County, Indiana (1890)
--African-American Veterans in Warrick County, Indiana (1890)
These databases were compiled from the 1890 soldiers enrollment lists for the respective counties. They are premium databases, accessible only to IGS members.

Marion County Society To Discuss Sharecroppers

The Allen County Public Library in Fort Wayne will host a program, "WeRelate: Create/Edit," on Tuesday, October 6 from 10 to 11 am in the Computer Classroom. Cynthia Theusch will show you how to create individual and family pages to add your family history information to WeRelate. Participants must create an account with WeRelate before attending the program, and should bring family group sheets, a GEDCOM file on a flash drive, and some photos. Seating is limited. Marriage Indexing: Progress Report
The latest progress report for the Indiana Marriage Indexing Project shows that volunteers have completed the batches of records that were available for Adams County and are well into indexing the records available for Allen County and Carroll County:

--Ministers of Indiana Diocese, Episcopal Church (1888)--a listing of Episcopal clergy as found in an annual journal.
College Records
--Faculty of DePauw University, Greencastle (1899)--a listing of teachers as found in a school yearbook.
--Students of Indianapolis College of Pharmacy, Indianapolis (1940-1943)--a listing of students as found in the Mistura yearbook for 1940. The Indianapolis College of Pharmacy later became part of Butler University.
County Records
--School Enumeration of Union Township, Adams County, Indiana (1853)--this database comes from an enumeration done in September 1853. The purpose of the enumeration was to record how many children in a family were attending school. The enumeration was found in the Indiana State Archives.
This database was contributed by Ron Darrah and is part of the 2 for 92 Project, where IGS will develop a minimum of two genealogical databases for each of the 92 counties in Indiana and post them to the Members Only area.
Military Records
--Revolutionary War Veterans Living In Indiana Who Were Denied Pensions (1839)--a listing as found in a Congressional document.
Miscellaneous Records
--Lawyers in Indiana State Bar Association (1912)--a listing of all members of the State Bar in 1912. This database also includes memorials for members who had died within the year.
