The Jefferson County Courthouse in Madison, Indiana is on fire. The cupola has been destroyed and the fire appears to be burning on the top floor right now.
Many records may be in jeopardy, either from the fire itself or water damage. This county has not suffered a major record loss in its entire previous history. It was formed in 1811.
The current courthouse was built about 1850, and was just repainted for the Madison bicentennial, including a gold tone on the cupola.
I saw the courthouse last weekend. So sad. They say the waterlogged records were frozen to prevent molding and taken away in refrigerated trucks to be restored.
