Southern Indiana Genealogical Society to Discuss Overseas Research

Ric Manning, family historian, will present "Searching For Rosario: Turning A European Vacation Into A Genealogical Expedition" at the Thursday, March 1 meeting of the Southern Indiana Genealogical Society. Mr. Manning will explain how his search to learn more about a mysterious great-grandfather led him to a seventeenth century village in the mountains of Sicily. Mr. Manning writes the popular “Gizmo” column and reviews books about the Civil War for the Courier-Journal. Meeting time is 7 pm in the Strassweg Auditorium of the New Albany-Floyd County Public Library (180 W. Spring St., New Albany, IN). The public is invited to attend.

At its January 28th board meeting, the Indiana Genealogical Society appointed Sheila Kell of Vernon to fill the unexpired term of the Southeast District Director. Sheila is the Local History and Genealogy Librarian for the Jennings County Public Library and is the coordinator for the Jennings County site on INGenWeb. She was also appointed as the Indiana County Genealogist for Jennings County in 2011.

The Southeast District Director represents Dearborn, Decatur, Fayette, Franklin, Jefferson, Jennings, Ohio, Ripley, Switzerland and Union counties.

FGS Seeking Lecture Proposals for 2013 Conference in Fort Wayne

The Federation of Genealogical Societies is now accepting lecture proposals for their 2013 conference, which will be held August 21-24, 2013 in Fort Wayne. The conference theme is "Journey Through Generations," which has dual meaning. It symbolizes the literal journey our ancestors took through America's heartland, on rivers, railroads, Indian trails, wagon roads, canals and the Underground Railroad. The theme also infers the virtual journey that genealogists take through bygone times and distant places as they explore the lives of their ancestors generation by generation.

Topics relating to the Midwest, migration patterns, technology, regional repositories, and religious and ethnic groups are encouraged. Wednesday, 21 August 2013, will be an all-day "Focus on Societies" program for genealogical society officers, board members, volunteers, and other interested parties. The program committee is specifically seeking new and dynamic proposals that will provide exceptional and unique educational experiences for conference attendees. Proposals for workshops and sponsored talks are also encouraged.

Categories for submissions include:

--Transportation (e.g. canals, Great Lakes, railroads)

Allen County Library Offers Family Tree Maker Training

The Genealogy Center at the Allen County Public Library in Fort Wayne is offering hands-on computer sessions in using the Family Tree Maker software. Each session will focus on a specific section of the software, so attendees can register for one session or all seven. Participants should bring a flash drive to save their work.

The sessions are:
--Wednesday, March 14, 2012, 4:00 - 4:30 p.m., learn how to begin using Family Tree Maker in the Getting Started Session.
--Wednesday, March 28, 2012, 10:00-11:00 a.m., explore adding individuals, facts and notes on individuals and families in the People Session.

Indiana DNR's Cemetery Registry

Ron Darrah points out that the Indiana Department of Natural Resources' Division of Historic Preservation and Archaeology has a great Indiana cemeteries registry online. The cemeteries registry is part of the State Historic Architectural and Archaeological Research Database (known as SHAARD).

From the SHAARD page, you must click on "SHAARD Access," then look for the link on the right side of the page to "Enter SHAARD as a Guest." Once you've read through and accepted the Terms & Conditions, you're taken to the screen for Structural Surveys. You'll want to select "Cemetery Registry" from the Survey Type, then you'll have the option of searching by either county, historic name or even the city. Clicking on the "Search" button then displays a list of results. Many of the listings include photos of the site, and some even have burial readings included with them. There are also maps (which you may need to rotate).

DNR staffer Jeannie Regan-Dinius has done a great job accumulating a massive amount of data. It's always a work in progress, so please donate additional information if you have it!

La Porte County Society To Discuss 1940 Census

The La Porte County, Indiana Genealogical Society will meet at 7 pm on Tuesday, February 14 (weather permitting) at the Swanson Center for Older Adults (910 State Street, La Porte IN). Following a short business meeting, Alan Zeller and Harold Henderson will present a program about the 1940 census, which will be released to the public on April 2, 2012. They will discuss what questions were asked of the 132 million Americans that were then living, and also how researchers can find their families in the 1940 census when there is no name index yet.

The Danville Public Library will hold a workshop, "Get Ready for the 1940 Census!", on Saturday, March 10 at 10 am in the library's program room. Indiana Room manager Cindy Rutledge will discuss the 1940 federal population census, which will be released to the public on April 2, 2012. Indiana Genealogist, the electronic quarterly journal of the Indiana Genealogical Society, is currently seeking submissions. We’re looking for narrative articles and case studies involving Hoosier subjects as well as transcriptions, abstracts, or indexes of source material. We’d especially like to see articles about using unusual sources or new technologies. Illustrated material is particularly welcome.

Indiana State Archives Adds Spanish War Veterans Database

The Indiana State Archives has added an online database about Indiana's Spanish-American War veterans. The United Spanish War Veterans Membership Files database includes over 6,470 entries for members of the Indiana Department of the United Spanish War Veterans (USWV). The membership files contain applications, membership information, pension correspondence, and death notices. Information on spouses and widows can also be found within many files.

Rush County Society Publishes Civil War Book

In honor of the 150th anniversary of the Civil War, the Rush County Genealogical Society has published "Let Us Die To Make Men Free: Civil War Soldiers of Rush County, Indiana." The book contains information on 66 individual soldiers who either lived in, enlisted in or died in Rush County, as well as historical information on the regiments and engagements. House Bill 1093 Advances in Indiana Legislature

House Bill 1093, which would impose fines of up to $500 on government officials or agencies that are found to have violated the state's public records law or the open door law, has advanced out of committee. The vote was 11-0 by the House's Government and Regulatory Reform Committee. It now advances to the full House for consideration.

Indiana Legislature To Consider Fines For Open Records Violations

The Indiana General Assembly is considering a bill, House Bill 1093, that would impose fines upon government officials or agencies that are found to have violated the state's public records law or the open door law. The fine would be $100 for the first offense and $500 for repeated offenses, with the state's Public Access Counselor responsible for determining if a violation occurred. The bill also calls for the creation of a fund to be used by the Public Access Counselor to educate government officials as well as the public about the open records laws.

HB 1093 is sponsored by Representatives Kevin Mahan and Kathy Kreag Richardson. The bill is scheduled for its first hearing in the House's Government and Regulatory Reform Committee on Tuesday, January 17th. Representative Mahan chairs the committee; other members of the committee are:

I am trying to find any information related to the marriage of Charles Corwin BOWKER (b. 1871; d. Oct 1929) to Lois Wealthy BRANSTRATOR (b. 1892 Fort Wayne, IN; d. 1960 Denver, CO). Their first child, Charles Corwin BOWKER, Jr. was born 26 Aug 1919 in Fort Wayne, IN; died 1970 Chicago, Cook, IL. Their marriage would be ca. 1918, most likely in Allen County. The family appears in the 1920 Federal Census living in Fort Wayne, Ward 6, but the father, Charles Corwin BOWKER, is not listed as head of household. He travelled quite a bit and was doing business in South Bend. I believe that their religious affiliation is Episcopal or Lutheran.

Edward PORSCH was my great grandfather he was born on 4 Oct 1870, in Germany. He came to the USA, and was living in Osgood, Ripley County, IN. He died on 8 Aug 1947 in Ripley County IN. Edward was born in Lantem East Prussia and came to America with his brothers and had a farm in Ripley County

My great grandmother Bertha VETTER PORSCH was born 28 Oct 1880 in Baden-Wurttemberg, Germany. She passed away at Manderly Nursing Home in Osgood, IN on the 18 June 1975 Osgood, Ripley, IN.

They are both buried at St. Johns Cemetery in Osgood, along with my grandmother Mary Johanna PORSCH NEAD born 2 Jan 1907,Osgood, Ripley, IN she passed away on the 7July 1984, Osgood, Ripley, IN, Mary Jo grew up in Osgood, IN a very devoted member of St. Johns Catholic Church. She was married to Stanly Hubert NEAD and they had 2 children Peggy NEAD FALLIS, also buired at St. Johns in Osgood and Dennis Edward NEAD buried in Fort Myers, Florida.

I am trying to find out information regarding my grandmothers birth certificate. I am not sure but think Edward and Bertha may have been married in Osgood. They did have another child before my grandmother that passed away after birth. I believe they where Jewish and changed to Catholic when they came to Osgood. Are there any records for Ripley County for the 1890 to 1940 time period?

Project to Create Free 1940 Census Index

Online entities Archives.com, FamilySearch.org and findmypast.com have announced a collaboration to create an index of the 1940 census when the census is released to the public in April 2012. This index will be online and free to the public. Archives.com had already announced they would be hosting the digital images of the 1940 census online for free access by the public.

This census indexing project has the support of the Federation of Genealogical Societies and the National Genealogical Society, among others. The full press release about this collaboration is available here.

Their first child, Charles Corwin BOWKER, Jr. was born 26 Aug 1919 in Fort Wayne, IN; died 1970 Chicago, Cook, IL. Their marriage would be ca. 1918, most likely in Allen County. The family appears in the 1920 Federal Census living in Fort Wayne, Ward 6, but the father, Charles Corwin Bowker, is not listed as head of household. He travelled quite a bit and was doing business in South Bend. I believe that their religious affiliation is Episcopal or Lutheran.

LaGrange County Cemetery Vandalized

According to this news item, the Pretty Prairie Cemetery on County Road 475 E and County Road 750 N in rural Howe, LaGrange County, Indiana was recently vandalized. Damage is estimated to be several thousand dollars, with at last one tombstone being taken out to the road and smashed.

According to FindAGrave.com, Pretty Prairie Cemetery is also known as United Methodist Church Cemetery and lists over 500 burials, some dating back to the 1850's.

I am looking for information on Joseph W SMITH. He married Nettie FARMER (1865-1964) in 1884 in Cass County, IN and they had two confirmed children and one other possible child. The children are James Alvie Smith (1885-1947) and Harvey William Smith (1887-1937. Born n Cass County, IN SMITH's have to be the toughest names to trace. Joseph seems to have disappeared somewhere around 1890 and I have been unable to find any information about him. So my paternal tree stops at my great great grandfather. Can anybody help me find more information about Joseph W SMITH?

I have been working on my family history for a few years now, and still have a huge Indiana road block. My grandfather was born in Indianapolis in 1889 or 1890. His last name was changed to that of Grandparents " TAYLOR" , in the census records it shows Gertrude TAYLOR as divorced. I cant find a marriage record for her, to see who she married. I believe she is his mother, and her parents raised him.

It is a fascinating glimpse into the reading habits of Delaware County residents, and the database also contains supplemental information about the residents, as compiled from census records and city directories.

Bartholomew County Society Offers War of 1812 Calendar

Social Security Applications Now Have Information Restricted

Bad news for researchers who request the Social Security application of an ancestor - if the record you are requesting is for someone whose birthdate isn't at least 100 years ago (e.g. 1911 or earlier), the Social Security Administration is now blacking out the parents' names. As Megan Smolenyak Smolenyak points out in her blog, this would mean the parents would likely have been born 120-150 years ago.

Union County Cemetery Vandalized

According to an article in the Richmond Palladium-Item, Silver Creek Cemetery in Liberty Township, Union County has been vandalized. The damage was estimated to cost thousands of dollars to repair, with over 80 tombstones broken or toppled. The cemetery's listing on Find A Grave shows 113 burials, dating back to the early 1800's.

At its November board meeting, the Indiana Genealogical Society appointed 4 more Indiana County Genealogists:

Sue Caldwell of Rensselaer is the Indiana County Genealogist for Jasper County. Sue moved to Indiana in 1961 and will soon celebrate her 50th anniversary with her husband James. She worked in banking for 20 years and has been doing genealogical research for about 40 years. In addition to the Indiana Genealogical Society, she also holds memberships in the Jasper County Historical Society, Daughters of the American Revolution and the Ohio Genealogical Society. She has several projects under consideration, including digitizing some of the genealogical records available at the Jasper County Historical Society and starting a photo collection of Jasper County families and their ancestors.

Barb Mulholland of Wolcottville is the Indiana County Genealogist for LaGrange County. Barb is a life member of the Noble County Genealogical Society and has spent the past few years in LaGrange County and Noble County doing genealogy research. She is currently partnering with the LaGrange County Historical Society, the LaGrange County Public Library, the local DAR Chapter and 4-H leaders to form a strong LaGrange County Genealogical Society.

Debby Warren of Clinton is the Indiana County Genealogist for Vermillion County. Debby has worked very closely with Walter Warren, the former ICG for Vermillion County, and has a good working relationship with the county clerk's office. She volunteers in the genealogy department of the Vermillion County Public Library, helping them with indexing and enjoys helping others with their research. She serves on the board of directors of the Wabash Valley Genealogy Society and is also on several of their committees.

Terri Wargo of Williamsport is the Indiana County Genealogist for Warren County. A lifelong resident of Warren County, she serves as the director of the West Lebanon-Pike Township Public Library and is also the Warren County Historian. Terri enjoys writing articles for the Danville, Illinois Commercial News and is dedicated to the preservation of Warren County history and helping anyone with their genealogy.

George DeForest MOREE was b. 13 Nov 1854 in Avilla, Noble Co. only s/o Benjamin MOREE and Lydia Ann (HOKE) MOREE of Kendallville. Court Docket say he was sued on 5 Mar 1888 - by Minerva BLY for damages on breach of promise of marriage contract. He said he didn't. Case was continued at defendant's cost. June 1888 Civil Docket.

[I tried to find the papers for this case and the only ones remaining were the Docket record and Court announcements.]

James came to Indiana from Portsmouth, VA with 8 children in 1851-52. He was a gunsmith by trade and became an assessor for Vanderburgh Cty. 2 additional children were born in Ind. He died suddenly in 1856 and is buried in St. Joseph's Catholic Cemetery, Evansville.

Fountain County Cemetery Damaged by Construction

According to a report by the Fountain County Cemetery Commission, some of the graves at Burch-Covalt Cemetery has been damaged by nearby construction. The cemetery dates back to 1858 and includes 47 graves that lie underneath U.S. 41. Read the article in the Danville (Illinois) Commercial-News for more information.

National Archives Posts 1940 Census Video

With the release of the 1940 census planned for April 2012, the National Archives has posted a 10-minute video on YouTube. The video is a newsreel from the time, instructing census enumerators on how they were to complete their forms and the importance of the census. It offers some fascinating details about the questions that were asked for the 1940 census, including the many detailed questions about each person's employment. Changes to Social Security Death Index

Updates made to the Social Security Death Index (SSDI) will no longer include deaths that are reported from death records, due to state laws that restrict public access to vital records. Also, some 4 million entries that are already in the SSDI will be removed because they used death records as their source.

Marion Public Library Receives Grant For Computers

The Marion Public Library in Grant County recently received a Library Services and Technology Act (LSTA) grant for $6,559 from the Indiana State Library. The grant was used to purchase 4 computers and a scanner for the library's Indiana Room. The library matched the grant and purchased a printer and ergonomic work stations for the computers. With this new equipment, Indiana Room patrons have access to current technology for their genealogy research, and the Indiana Room can also provide computer training sessions to expand patrons' research skills.

Parking Changes in Downtown Indianapolis

Researchers who have not visited downtown Indianapolis recently - particularly those going to the Indiana State Library - should be aware of changes if you park on the street. When the city recently privatized their parking meter system, the charges themselves increased, and you now have to pay to park on Saturdays. Additionally, if you let your meter expire, it now costs you $20 instead of $5. Two hours is the maximum time you can pay for at one time. You might also want to consider doing some of your research at area libraries such as Plainfield, Greenfield, Noblesville or Anderson.
