For the Indiana Genealogical Society, we do have over 200 databases that are free to the public. We also have continuing costs for maintaining those databases online. And by collecting membership dues, we are able to make some data freely available that is otherwise very expensive to maintain, like the Hendricks County probate records project. Some of us do not have the extra money to be members. All of this information would be free if people had the time and money to travel to the places where they are located.
