Ebooks Published for Indiana Civil War Unit
Two eBook supplements to The 47th Indiana Volunteer Infantry: A Civil War History by David Williamson (McFarland, 2012) are now available for those with Nook and Kindle devices.
For those who are interested in the application of military law during the Civil War, there is The 47th Indiana Volunteer Infantry: Court-Martial Case Files. (A Kirkbride, Keagy, Johnston, Perrott & Rose eBook.)
The nine court-martial cases were compiled and transcribed verbatim by author/editor David Williamson from copies of the original, hand-written, case files. The case files of the four officers and seven soldiers presented in this supplement comprise all of the court-martial records for the 47th Indiana Volunteer Infantry found by the Index Project at the National Archives in Washington, DC.
The cases include:
1."One Bully Down" -- A soldier/civilian encounter in Memphis, TN.
2. "An Officer's Privilege" -- The rights of enlisted men in the field.
3. "A Pretty Wild Boy" -- How the court dealt with rambunctious soldiers.
4. "Back Home Again in Indiana" -- An early case of absence without leave.
5. "The Misbehaving Soldiers" -- The regiment's only case on record of soldier misconduct in battle.
6. "The Knight-Errant" -- Differences of opinion among the lawyer-officers of the 47th Indiana.
7. "The Cantankerous Cook" -- Violent disputes among enlisted men.
8. "The 'Pugelistick' Champion of the State of Indiana" -- Defining "enlistment" and "desertion" in a volunteer regiment.
9. "The Misplaced" -- Trouble with paperwork during wartime.
These court-martial cases provide an unabridged example of the application of Civil War military law in one infantry regiment active in the field throughout the war.
For those who are interested in the social and political history of Indiana as well as the military history of the Civil War, there is: Slack’s War: Selected Civil War Letters of General James R. Slack, 47th Indiana Volunteer Infantry, to His Wife, Ann, 1862-1865. (A Kirkbride, Keagy, Johnston, Perrott & Rose eBook.)
Slack's War consists of 121 letters written from 1862 to 1865 by General James R. Slack, 47th Indiana Volunteer Infantry, to his wife, Ann. General Slack's letters span the entire length of his service and include not only his commentary on all the events and battles he participated in, but also his commentary on the Indiana home front, the Indiana Treason Trials, life in the occupied Mississippi Valley, life in occupied Mobile and Spring Hill, Alabama, and postwar service at Brazos Santiago Island and Brownsville, Texas.
The Indiana State Library (ISL) permitted use of only one-half of the James R. Slack inventory and these letters, transcribed verbatim by the editor, comprise the half he selected from the ISL's annotated bibliography. Excerpts of some of Slack's letters appeared in his book. Most of General Slack’s questions and comments about individuals and issues back home were omitted from The 47th Indiana Volunteer Infantry: A Civil War History, but are presented verbatim in Slack’s War.

Indiana 1940 Census Indexing Reaches 100% Again
According to FamilySearch's progress map for the 1940 census indexing project, Indiana has reached 100% again. In the coming weeks FamilySearch should begin getting the index ready to go online for searching. Once again we thank all the volunteers who have been indexing and helping to arbitrate the entries for the 3.4 million people living in Indiana in 1940. You may remember that in an earlier post, we told you how FamilySearch had discovered that several batches of the 1940 census for Indiana had not been loaded into the indexing software.

She clips obituaries from newspapers, creates an every-name index and puts them in manuscript form for printing. She has also produced obituary indexes in a database, replacing a card file. She teaches kids in 4-H how to do genealogy and compile family history. Judy is also involved in cemetery restoration and instrumented a "Cemetery Walk" this last fall. Judy is treasurer with the Allen County Genealogical Society of Indiana and has helped with indexing databases for the Indiana Genealogical Society.
Charlotte Blair received the Outstanding County Genealogical Contribution Award for her work in Whitley County. She has done an outstanding job as the Indiana County Genealogist for Whitley County. Charlotte works with the local newspaper to promote activities and programs with the genealogy society and writes a monthly genealogy column for them. She keeps the society's website up to date and continues to add new databases for public use. She works with the county libraries and public officials keeping a watchful eye on the genealogical records. Charlotte is also active in the Whitley County Historical Society and works to promote cooperation and collaboration between all the groups. She is very active in the Noble County Genealogical Society and volunteers many hours at the Noble County Public Library.
Charlotte has helped with indexing for the Indiana Genealogical Society.

1940 Census Indexing Update: More Indiana Batches Found
Last week the FamilySearch progress map for the 1940 census indexing showed that Indiana had been completed and that they would be getting it ready to go online in the next few weeks. On Friday, FamilySearch discovered that it had in fact NOT loaded all of Indiana's 1940 census images into their indexing software, so additional indexing is needed before Indiana is completed.
From the FamilySearch Indexing Facebook page (http://www.facebook.com/familysearchindexing):
"Indiana not complete for 1940 Census:
When we started the Indiana—1940 US Census indexing project, not all of the images and batches were included. We’ve now made all of them available, so Indiana appears on the Download Batch list again in the indexing program. The percentage complete has changed to 18%, instead of 100%. We’re very sorry for the confusion, but we hope all those indexers and arbitrators interested in Indiana will band together to increase that percentage again."
Understandably, the Indiana Genealogical Society is very disappointed with this development, as we all wanted to see the Indiana index complete. However, we are determined to keep working on the index and get it completed sooner rather than later. Please team up with us to help finish indexing the 1940 census by creating a FamilySearch indexing account and associating it with the Indiana Genealogical Society (Instructions on how to associate your account with a society are at http://the1940census.com/video-training/).
Some good news: FamilySearch is tracking the work of societies. The Indiana Geneaogical Society is currently ranked 6th among large societies and has the highest arbitration rate at 98%. Let’s see if we can make it to the top of the leaderboard!
Questions about IGS and the 1940 census indexing can be sent to IGS Vice President Tina Lyons at genwishlist@gmail.com.

Query: KELLY/KELLEY of Sullivan County
I am researching my second Great Grandfather's parents. Joseph A KELLY or KELLY was born in Merom, Sullivan, IN, 12 June 1837 and d. 04 December 1912 in East Newburn, Jersey, IL. His mother may have been Polly or Mary, based on the 1850 US Census record. The family came from Ireland and were Cumberland Presbyterians. I inquired about records from the church but have not gotten any responses. I want to know who Joseph KELLY's parents were. I have visited the Courthouse in Sullivan Co but their records burned in 1850.

Query: CALDWELL of Hendricks County
I am looking for the death records from Hendricks County from 1860 to 1890. My husbands grandfathers are buried in Crown Point cemetary and are named James CALDWELL d. 1875 and Richard G. CALDWELL d.1862. Richards wife Editha died in 1866 and three of their children Rebecca, William H. And Oliver all died 1867,1867, and 1874 respectively. Richard was only 41,Edith 39 and the children 18,17 and 20. Rebecca and William died 5 days apart. I am wondering if they died from the Cholera epidemics that swept through Indiana in the mid 1800's. James, Richards father outlived them all and was 76 when he passed. How sad he had to watch his family die. I am hoping the death records will give cause of death. Thank you for any help
