DAR To Hold Genealogy Workshop in Anderson

The Indiana Daughters of the American Revolution will hold a genealogy workshop on Saturday, September 17 from 1-4 pm at the Anderson Public Library in Madison County. Those who have begun researching and have met challenges will be able to consult with experienced researchers who will help solve some puzzles. Anyone who has a Revolutionary War ancestor and would like more information about DAR membership will also receive assistance. Marion County Society To Hold Genealogy Conference in Indianapolis

The Genealogical Society of Marion County, in cooperation with the Indiana Historical Society, will hold their 16th Annual Genealogy Conference on Saturday, November 19 at the Eugene and Marilyn Glick Indiana History Center in Indianapolis. The conference theme is "Discovering Records of Our Immigrant Ancestors," and the featured speaker is Melissa Shimkus of the Genealogy Center of the Allen County Public Library in Fort Wayne.

Conference registration is $30 for the member rate (the member rate applies to members of the Genealogical Society of Marion County, the Indiana Historical Society, and the Indiana African American Genealogy Group), $38 for the non-member rate. Members can get registration for just $27 (an additional 10% savings) if they register by October 16.

IGS Appoints Starke County Genealogist

At its August board meeting, the Indiana Genealogical Society appointed Audrey Kinezian of Knox, Indiana as the Indiana County Genealogist for Starke County. Audrey is a Chicago native who discovered genealogy while living in New England in the early 1970's. She was able to take advantage of learning from devoted librarians and archivists long before genealogy became the huge hobby that it is today. She became a professional genealogist in 1982 and lived all over the United States before retiring to Starke County in 1997.

IGS To Participate in FGS Society Showcase

The Indiana Genealogical Society will be one of 22 societies participating in the first ever Society Showcase at the Federation of Genealogical Societies Conference September 7-10, 2011 in Springfield, Illinois. The Society Showcase event will be held on Thursday, September 8 from 5 to 8 pm at the Prairie Capital Convention Center as part of the extended Exhibit Hall hours. The special society tables will remain in place Friday and Saturday.

IGS board members will be staffing the booth Thursday night and selling memberships. Stop by to talk about the society and consider becoming a member.

The Hamilton East Public Library in Noblesville will hold a workshop, "Tracing The History of Your Home," on Saturday, September 17 from 9:30 am to 12:30 pm in the library's Genealogy Classroom. You'll learn what resources are available to trace the history of your house and its former occupants. There will also be a guided tour of the library's Indiana Room.

Hamilton County Library To Hold Computer Workshop

The Hamilton East Public Library in Noblesville will hold a computer workshop on using the databases at Fold3 (formerly Footnote.com) and American Ancestors on Wednesday, September 28 from 9:30 am to noon in the library's computer training lab. In this hands-on workshop, you'll have access to a computer and will learn the most effective way to search for your ancestors in the Fold3 and American Ancestors databases. There will also be time at the end of the workshop for you to start your own research.

African-American Genealogy Summit in Fort Wayne

The National Black Genealogy Summit will be held October 20-22, 2011 at the Allen County Public Library and the Grand Wayne Convention Center in Fort Wayne, Indiana. The theme is "African Diaspora: Awakening Our Legacy." Speakers include Tony Burroughs, Damani Davis of the National Archives; DNA expert Roberta Estes; Jim Ison; Shamele Jordan; Lisa Lee; Timothy Pinnick, and Angela Walton-Raji. Summit attendees can also take advantage of special extended hours at The Genealogy Center at the Allen County Public Library on October 20-23.

The two-day Summit on Friday, October 21 and Saturday, October 22 offers the best in African American genealogical lectures and presentations. A multi-track pre-summit program on October 20 is free and open to all, and focuses on family health history, foundations of genealogical research, a librarians' track, and information sharing. A booksigning and gospel concert are planned on the evening of the pre-summit from 6-9 pm.

Award winning author and historian Carla Peterson will present the plenary session on Friday, October 21. Her presentation is titled, "What's Under the Dust? Recovering Family History from the Archives." Her most recent publication is an amazing work titled, "Black Gotham: A Family History of African Americans in Nineteenth-Century New York City." She is a must hear!

Visual artist and illustrator Michele Wood will give the plenary session on Saturday, October 22. Her presentation is titled, "Not to Be Forgotten: One Artist’s Journey of Going Back Home." Her award-winning and nationally acclaimed art is vibrant and engaging, as is the story of how her family's history has guided her hand.

The 2011 National Black Genealogy Summit is hosted by the Allen County Public Library Foundation and the African American Genealogy Society of Fort Wayne (IN). Planning partners are: African/African American Historical Museum; Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Inc., Fort Wayne Alumnae Chapter; It Is Well With My Soul; and The Links, Incorporated Fort Wayne Chapter.

Civil War-Era Photos Sought for Poster

The Indiana State Historic Records Advisory Board (SHRAB) is seeking photo submissions for their 2011 Indiana Archives Month poster. This year's theme is Indiana and the Civil War. Any Indiana resident or entity with an original photograph that has an Indiana connection and was taken during the Civil War era (1861-1865) is encouraged to submit a high-quality reproduction for consideration.

Each October, the SHRAB, in conjunction with the Indiana Commission on Public Records, Society of Indiana Archivists, and the National Historical Publications and Records Commission, produces a poster to raise public awareness of the importance and historical significance of Indiana's archival and historical repositories.

Photo submissions will be reviewed by the Indiana Archives Month Committee and Indiana SHRAB. All entries must include a description and photo credit (if applicable) and be of high resolution (minimum of 300 dpi). Digital submissions must be sent via e-mail to shrab@icpr.in.gov and print submissions mailed to:

Southern Indiana Society To Meet in New Albany

IGS To Hold Work Session for Hendricks County Probate Records

The Indiana Genealogical Society will hold a "Saturday work session" on Saturday, October 15 from 9:30 am to 4 pm at the Plainfield Public Library in Hendricks County for our project to preserve and digitize Hendricks County probate records. The public is welcome to drop by at any time during the day to help unfold the papers and organize them into folders.

Volunteers have worked on almost 2,000 records since this project began in 2009, and among the fascinating items that have been discovered is a receipt from author Kurt Vonnegut, Jr.'s great-grandfather.

--A diploma for Mary J. Magnett of Prairie Township, Tipton County, dated April 1899 - found at Booth M42, Original Treasure Mart (1201 E. Vaile Ave., Kokomo IN)

--A diploma for Charles Hawkins of Liberty Township, Tipton County, dated April 1923 - found at Booth F500, Treasure Mart Mall (116 W. Alto Rd., Kokomo IN).

Marion County Society To Discuss Church Archives

In Memoriam: Kris Manley, Spencer County ICG

The Indiana Genealogical Society offers condolences to the family and friends of Kris Manley of Spencer County, who passed away earlier this week. Kris was a longtime fixture in Spencer County genealogy, offering her services at the Spencer County Public Library in Rockport and authoring several genealogy resources on the area. The Spencer County Historical Society named her their Genealogist of the Year in 2007. She also directed researchers as our Indiana County Genealogist for Spencer County.

State Library To Host Civil War Symposium

The Indiana State Library in Indianapolis will host the fourth annual Civil War Study Group Symposium all day on Saturday, September 17. Papers will be presented by:

--S. Chandler Lighty, Papers of Abraham Lincoln, " 'Able and Efficient Services:' Lew Wallace and Indiana's Mobilization for War, April 15-23, 1861"

--Richard F. Nation, Eastern Michigan University, "Indiana Agriculture and the Civil War"

--Steven J. Ramold, Eastern Michigan University, "Boys of '61: The Integration of Citizen-soldiers into the Union Army"

--Daniel W. Stowell, Papers of Abraham Lincoln, "Mobilizing Hoosiers: Abraham Lincoln's Indiana Appointments in 1861"

In preparation for lively discussion, symposium participants are encouraged to read Mark R. Wilson's The Business of Civil War: Military Mobilization and the State, 1861-1865 (Johns Hopkins University Press, 2006).

Historians are encouraged to participate in this day of illuminating scholarship. The CWSG strives to be a relaxed forum for open discussion and debate on important issues relating to the American Civil War.

To help cover the cost of breakfast and lunch, there will be a $20 registration fee.

Indianapolis Stake of LDS Church To Offer Free Family History Workshop

The Indianapolis Stake Center of the LDS Church (900 E. Stop 11 Rd., Indianapolis, IN) will hold their second annual Indy Family History Workshop on Saturday, September 17 from 9 am to 4 pm. The theme of the workshop is "Heirlooms: The Gift of Knowing Your Ancestors," and topics will include preserving heirlooms, courthouse records, cemetery records, census records and British and Scandinavian research.

Cass County Library To Host Revolutionary War Workshop

The Cass County Public Library (616 E. Broadway, Logansport, IN) will host a Daughters of the American Revolution genealogy workshop on Saturday, August 27 from 1 to 4:30 pm. If you are a beginner with family research, you'll learn how and where to get started; if you have already started, you'll receive help with challenges you've run into. If you have a Revolutionary War ancestor, you can get help for your DAR membership application.

Indiana State Library Receives Grant To Digitize Newspapers

The Indiana State Library in Indianapolis has received a grant of almost $300,000 from the National Endowment for the Humanities (NEH). The grant will be used to digitize 100,000 pages of Indiana's newspapers and place them online at the Indiana Memory Project. For more information, you can read their press release.

August 2011 Issue of IGS Newsletter Added To Members-Only

The Indiana Genealogical Society has added the August 2011 issue of IGS Newsletter, the society's bi-monthly newsletter, to the IGS Records section of Members Only. This issue includes numerous news items from around the state.

The newsletter is available for download in its regular size, as well as in a compressed version, so that those with slower Internet connections can download it faster.

The newsletter is a premium database, accessible only to IGS members.
