Hendricks County Historian Appointed

The Indiana Historical Society has appointed John Parsons of Clayton to be their County Historian for Hendricks County. The position, which had been vacant since the death of Plainfield librarian Susan Miller Carter, is for 3 years.

Parsons is well known to local history researchers for his efforts to digitize the county's records, which began when he was the systems administrator for the county (he retired last year). In the words of his wife Phyllis, "he enjoys most old things," and really knows the history of Hendricks County, including the early settlers, as well as old roads and towns that no longer exist.

He has also been a minister at the Belleville Bible Church (formerly Salem Methodist Church) for the past 37 years. He and Phyllis (who is well-known in her own right for her work with the Hendricks County Museum) have been married for 50 years. They have 5 children and 15 grandchildren (with another on the way).

John Parsons' contact information is available here.

Query: YOUNG / HENRY / EDDY of Monroe County

I am seeking information on a possible Monroe County, Indiana connection to my family. I am trying to find the parents of John Preston Young (born 1824 in Indiana; died 1877 in Camden County, Missouri), who married Celia Henry (born 1840 in Indiana), supposedly in 1858 in Waverly Township, Lincoln County, Missouri (I haven't found any documentation for this).

John Preston and Celia Young were in Lincoln County, Missouri for the 1860 census. They had several children: Rebecca Jane (1859-1941), James (born 1861), Mary E. (born 1863), Harriet (born 1865), Robert T. (born 1867), John Preston (1869-1956), M. Belle (born 1871), George (born 1873) and Celia (born 1876).

Celia Henry was the daughter of James M. Henry (born 1806) and Elizabeth (born 1808). James M. Henry is living in the household of John Preston Young and wife Celia in the 1860 census; in the 1850 census, James M. Henry and wife Elizabeth are in Carrolton, Carrol County, Arkansas, along with children Samuel Edy (born about 1834 in Indiana), Celia Henry and Jesse Henry (born about 1845 in Arkansas).

The Indiana State Library's Indiana pre-1850 marriage index shows that James Henry married Elizabeth Eddy on October 3, 1839 in Monroe County, Indiana - so Celia's parents were apparently from Monroe County. I also found that a Samuel Eddy married an Elizabeth Rains on April 8, 1825 in Monroe County - so this could be a previous husband for Elizabeth (Eddy) Henry.

The curious thing is that I haven't been able to find John Preston Young in the 1850 census, before he married Celia Henry. I did find that in the 1850 census for Benton Township, Monroe County, Indiana there is a Preston Young age 24 in the household of a Mary Young age 46 born Kentucky.  Is this maybe my John Preston Young? Did the Young and Henry families know each other in Indiana and then moved to Missouri together? Any help would be appreciated.

Query: TUTTLE of Hancock County

I was born and raised in Fortvlle, Hancock Co., Indiana in 1931 and lived there until moving to Florida in 1952.
When I was a little girl, a local carpenter/friend made my sisters(both older)a little wooden 4 drawer chest to keep doll clothes in. I taught Kindergarten at #90 in Indianapolis and used this chest in the Housekeeping Corner for many years and left it there when moving to Florida. Eleven years ago, when visiting #90, the present Kdg. teacher told me that it was still there and had been used and painted many colors since then. She talked to the Principal who gave it back to me. My own Granddaughter then used it for years during her childhood years. I have always felt that if there are any Relatives of RAYMOND TUTTLE who made this chest, that his family should have it and would be happy to take it back to Fortville to give it to them. I think it is possibly, at least 80 years old. Thank you,
